Review Overview

This fragrance-free eyeshadow primer has a thick, creamy texture that sheers out enough to fully prime eyelids with less than a pea-size amount. It's easy to apply with a clean fingertip, and sets within seconds to a smooth, crease-resistant matte finish.

Although High Voltage Skin is available in only one shade—"Skin"—the good news is that this shade is a neutral beige color. This primer is light enough to work on either pale or dark skin tones to improve the overall wear and vibrancy of any eyeshadow applied over it.

As for the light dusting of antioxidants in the formula, it's not enough to do much of anything for your skin, but those ingredients will remain stable thanks to being packaged in an opaque tube. Also thanks to the packaging, you don't have to worry about this primer drying out after continued use, which is a risk with similar eyeshadow primers that are housed in jars or compacts!

Pros:
  • Creamy texture blends well; easy to apply.
  • Smooth, crease-resistant matte finish.
  • Neutral beige shade is workable for all skin tones.
  • A little goes a long way, so this should last for months.
  • Packaging keeps the antioxidants stable during use.
  • Fragrance-free.
Cons:
  • None.
Claims

This smooth-textured essential glides over the eyelid without dragging. It performs like a magnet, preventing eyeshadow from migrating and creasing. Micro-encapsulated pigments float over the eye area, finessing skin texture and blurring fine lines. Use the Smoky shade to prep your lids for a smoldering smoky-eye look.

Brand Overview

Kat Von D At-A-Glance

Strengths: Excellent eyeshadow palettes and trios; long-wearing cream and liquid lipstick; truly lasting powder blushes and bronzers.

Weaknesses: A few products on the pricey side (this is a minor quibble).

Celebrity makeup lines are nothing new—we’ve seen dozens of them over the years—but this one is a first in that it shocked us a bit. Kat Von D’s main claim to fame was her successful tattooing enterprise, and her role as a former reality TV show star. Now, she's a makeup entrepreneur—and a very good one.

The line launched in 2007 with only two eyeshadow palettes, cream lipstick, and eyeliner, but since has expanded by adding several new products, including remarkable lip products, blushes and more. Just like most makeup lines, this is one to shop carefully; for every great product, there are a few that could use improvement.

All Kat Von D makeup products come packaged with the line’s signature images of roses and thorns (perhaps to reinforce Von D’s love of tattoo design), which definitely makes these products stand out among a sea of blandly packaged makeup containers.

Surprisingly good

This was my first Kat Von D product, thanks to Paula. I've seen this line at Sephora for years but never ventured to try an 'unknown' brand. This product is thick and pasty, but does sheer out. I happen to love the color, it hides blue veins on the eyelid; plus it works great and the price is reasonable for a 'better' brand.

Love this!!

I will not be without this primer!! I figure, if I am going through the trouble of finding a great eyeshadow, I at least want to make sure it looks its best and lasts. With this primer it does
