This sunscreen provides broad-spectrum protection that includes zinc oxide for reliable UVA (think anti-aging) screening. The zinc oxide is blended with several synthetic actives, each of which contributes to the robust protection this sunscreen provides. The slightly creamy base formula is easy to apply and sets to a soft satin sheen that, while a bit shiny, doesn't feel slick or greasy.

The base formula contains soothing agents as well as antioxidants known to help boost skin's defenses when exposed to sunlight. Although it contains fragrance in the form of ethylene Brassylate, the amount is low. Still, between that and the non-mineral active ingredients this isn't the ideal sunscreen for sensitive or rosacea-affected skin. It is best for normal to oily or combination skin, and may be applied to the face or body, which is true for most sunscreens.

One more comment: The company claims that the caffeine in this sunscreen "increases blood flow" , yet it doesn't do that. Caffeine constricts blood vessels, which decreases blood flow. Topically, caffeine's constrictive qualities can make it irritating to skin, yet it's also an anti-inflammatory and may convey antioxidant benefits.

Pros:
  • Provides broad-spectrum sun protection.
  • Antioxidants boost skin's environmental defenses.
  • Moisturizes without feeling slick or greasy.
  • Minimal fragrance.
Cons:
  • Expensive, though not terribly so.

Replenix Antioxidant Sunscreen Moisturizer SPF 50 Plus delivers moisture while shielding your skin from the sun's rays. Botanical extracts of bisabolol and squalane hydrate and nourish your skin while repairing environmental damage. Caffeine increases blood flow while zinc, ectoin and green tea polyphenols neutralize free radicals.

Octinoxate 7.5%, Octisalate 5.0%, Homosalate 7.0%, Oxybenzone 5.0%, Zinc Oxide 6.0%. Bisabolol, Caffeine USP, Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Polyphenols, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Caprylyl Glycol, Cetearyl Alcohol, Cetyl Phosphate, Cucumis Sativus (Cucmber) Fruit Extract, C13-14 Isoparaffin, Dimethicone, Disodium EDTA, Disodium Lauriminodipropionate Tocopheryl Phosphates, Ectoin, Ethylene Brassylate, Glycerin, Glyceryl Stearate, Laureth-7, PEG-12 Dimethicone, PEG-100 Stearate, Phenoxyethanol, Polyacrylamide, Polysorbate-60, Silybum (Silymarin) Marianum Fruit Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate, Squalane, Sorbic Acid, Water, Xanthan Gum.

Topix is best known for its two chief skin-care brands, Replenix and Citrix. Of the two, we're asked most often about the Replenix collection; the Citrix line is smaller and focused on anti-aging products with vitamin C. The Replenix products contain a broader range of anti-aging ingredients, such as retinol, green tea, and grape-derived resveratrol, and the claims are broader, too—so little surprise that the Replenix products appeal to more people concerned with signs of aging. Both Replenix and Citrix offer fragrance-free formulas, albeit at fairly high prices, which is typical of most physician-dispensed lines.

A chief selling point of Topix is its physician-dispensed angle, which gives the products a medical élan; in truth, however, not a single ingredient in these products is "medicinal," prescription, or exclusive to physician-sold products. That is, you don't need to see a doctor to be "prescribed" Topix products; rather, they can be obtained from several websites, no appointment necessary. The big question is whether or not you should add any Topix products to your shopping cart—and the answer is "it depends."

Within the Replenix line, the most interesting products include the serums and moisturizers. Although none of them are superior to the best options available, most of them do offer good (though pricey) formulas that treat skin to a range of beneficial ingredients.

If you're keen on retinol (and it's a great anti-aging ingredient), Replenix has you covered with several serums offering different strengths of retinol. The various strengths allow you to "step up" to stronger retinol products once your skin has acclimated to the lower strengths. Although that sounds intriguing, it's not really necessary. As we explain in the reviews, more retinol is not necessarily better, and some may find the higher-strength retinol products too sensitizing, so caution is warranted. Indeed, some people cannot tolerate any amount of retinol!

The Citrix products aren't all that exciting unless you want vitamin C in every product. Although there's nothing wrong with vitamin C, it's a mistaken notion to focus on one hero ingredient because skin requires a variety of beneficial ingredients to look and act younger. Topix also adds growth factors to their Citrix serums, but these growth-factor ingredients are unproven for topical use and may present risks (we explain why in the reviews). In short, Citrix isn't all that exciting, and several of these products fall short in one way or another.

Our research revealed that Topix has some intriguing products, but, with few exceptions, there is nothing that you cannot find elsewhere for less money. It's important to let go of the notion that skin-care products sold at a doctor's office are superior to those sold elsewhere. The truth is: There are good and bad products in every retail outlet—knowing what you're buying is more important than where you're buying it or who's selling it!

    Love...hate
    • I love that it doesn't stain my white clothes and it doesn't have that sunscreen smell that chemical sunscreens have. The worst is smelling like the beach at work. As for the fragrance, I don't notice it and I would say I'm particularly sensitive to most scents. I was so excited when I first tried this sunscreen. It fit all my requirements until my chest started breaking out. My face is much more sensitive than my chest, so I thought, but I haven't had issues on my face.

    Stronger fragrance than expected
    • I have to disagree respectfully on this. For the most part, this sunscreen's cost per size is good, but the fragrance from the ethylene brassylate was too much for me as a long-time Paula's Choice skincare user. I'm accustomed to PC's products having virtually no scent (other than from the ingredients themselves), and found the fragrance in this product similar to the kind of rose-scented potpourri. The smell lingered, and was off-putting when the product rubbed and remained on clothes.

    love it
    • Very moisturizing. Basically no scent (I hate fragrance.) Most sunscreens with any chemical sunscreens create redness for my sensitive skin/rosacea. This does NOT. I adore wearing this as sort of a primer, put on right before my foundation, or alone.
