Those with dry, itchy, eczema-prone skin, take note: Cetaphil's debut body wash is a winner! This creamy, ultra-moisturizing body wash is exceptionally gentle and a pleasure to use. The fragrance-free formula treats dry skin to smoothing emollients, including non-fragrant plant oils, while cleansing skin and leaving it soft and smooth. The amount of shea butter makes this slightly tricky to rinse, but you can always use it with a washcloth if desired. Cetaphil included niacinamide and vitamin E, but for the most part these good-for-skin ingredients will be rinsed down the drain. No matter, though: this remains a top body wash choice for those struggling with dry skin. It is not recommended for acne-prone skin, as the formula is too rich and could potentially make body breakouts worse.

Cetaphil RESTORADERM Skin Restoring Body Wash is formulated to gently cleanse very dry, eczema-prone skin, while protecting against moisture loss and increasing skin’s hydration

Water, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Sodium Trideceth Sulfate, Glycerin, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Lauroampoacetate, Cocamide MEA, Niacinamide, Tocopheryl Acetate, Allatoin, Arginine, Citric Acid, Methylisothiazolinone, Sodium PCA, 1, 2-Hexanedicol, Caprylyl Glycol, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Potassium Sorbate, Disodium EDTA.

This familiar, widely distributed skin-care collection is manufactured by Galderma, the same company that markets the prescription products Differin and MetroGel.  Given the dermatology heritage of Galderma (the company's Web site mentions this consistently), it's surprising the Cetaphil line hasn't advanced beyond the basics. Yes, most of what's available is a safe bet for those with sensitive skin, but it's disappointing that their SPF-rated products utilize active ingredients that can be a problem for sensitive skin. A mineral-based sunscreen would be a welcome addition for a line that stresses its value for sensitive skin!

We'd have expected the company to keep pace with the latest research into what it takes to create a truly great moisturizer, but that hasn't occurred either, and it could be done while still keeping the products suitable for those with sensitive skin.

As for their original Gentle Skin Cleanser, it is no longer one we recommend. Why? Although we were a champion of this cleanser for years (back when hardly anyone knew about it and good water-soluble cleansers were scarce), the formula has become dated and just isn't worth strong consideration over several other cleansers at the drugstore.

    Too drying
    • I tried this body wash after receiving a sample. I found that is leaves my skin drier than Dove Sensitive Skin and very itchy. It didn't work well for me.

    Amazing Body Wash
    • I have been on the hunt for a moisturizing but non greasy body wash for a long time. This product is moisturizing, feels silky but does not leave a film on my skin. Best of all I have not had a reaction to it. Many products have caused rashes & itching. It is also reasonably priced. I am very sensitive to fragrance & did not find the product to have an intolerable smell. I would definitely recommend this product for those with dry body skin.

    Nice feel, bad fragrance
    • This is a creamy white, silky smooth body wash that leathers gently. Leaves skin feeling beautifully soft. The only thing I don't like about it is that it has a fairly obnoxious chemical smell. It's a great choice if one can tolerate the smell as it really does leave sensitive skin feeling moisturized.
