Review Overview

A good lip balm that offers broad spectrum sun protection isn't easy to find, but this one really delivers! The emollient-rich formula packs a punch of hydration while imparting an ultra-sheer, berry hue that ever-so-slightly enhances lip's natural color.

Its broad spectrum sun protection not only keeps lips from getting burned, but also prevents them from showing signs of aging if you use it regularly. The formula also contains several antioxidants to help offset free radical damage and collagen degradation that can lead to thinning lips.

Interestingly, the acai that this lip balm is named after isn't among the ingredients list. When we contacted Supergoop! to find out why, they told us the acai part of the product name is in reference to the sheer pink tint it delivers. They agreed it isn't consistent with the marketing messaging and said they are working on a reformulation for to remedy this, with the new formula expected during spring 2015 (Supergoop!, we love your honesty, something many other cosmetic companies should follow).

Besides the issue with the name, the only other potential problem we see with this lip balm is that you may find the flavoring tempting to lick off, taking the benefits with it and increasing your chances of chapped lips (saliva is drying to lips). But if you can resist the urge, this is a stellar balm to soothe dry lips while protecting them from the sun!

Note: Acai Fusion Lip Balm is dispersed through an opaque tube that keeps the air/light-sensitive ingredients stable and makes application a breeze whether applied directly on lips on squeezed on to your finger.

Second note: This lip balm contains an in-part avobenzone sunscreen, but the avobenzone is not accompanied by octocrylene, an ingredient often used to stabilize avobenzone. We're not stating that this lip balm's sun protection isn't good, as there are other ways to stabilize avobenzone that aren't readily apparent from the ingredient list; however, based on the formula as presented, we remain a bit skeptical.

  • Emollient-rich formula soothes dry lips.
  • Broad spectrum SPF 30 offers anti-aging benefits.
  • Antioxidants help repair damage from sun.
  • Sheer berry tint enhances natural lip color.
  • Despite the name and claims, acai is not of its ingredients.

This three-in-one balm adds a sheer pink tint while moisturizing and protecting the lips. Shea butter provides long-lasting hydration while powerful antioxidant ingredients, including the fruit of the açaì palm, help to repair oxidation damage. Multiple sunscreen ingredients protect the lips from sunburn and photoaging.

Brand Overview

Strengths: All products offer broad spectrum sun protection as an added anti-aging benefit; majority of the products have non-greasy textures that easily absorb into skin; formulas are rated SPF 20 or greater.

Weaknesses: A preservative known to be sensitizing is present in a few of the products; several of the formulas contain potentially irritating fragrant plant extracts; Acai Fusion Lip Balm doesn’t actually contain acai.

OK, we have to get the confusion out of the way up front. The name “Supergoop!” sounds like it could be a line of hairstyling products, right? Not even close: Supergoop! is a company selling sun care products!

According to their Website: “We wanted to create a sunscreen that people actually enjoyed using so we created Supergoop! as a fun way to deliver a serious message. Supergoop! has a playful name—just try and say it without smiling— but tries to instill the importance of using UV protection every single day. The name also appeals to children, which is important because we want people to begin healthy sun habits starting from a young age.”

Alright, we can get behind that. The folks behind this brand are absolutely right that daily sunscreen use is a must for all ages.  Protecting skin from damaging UV rays is the best way to prevent skin cancer as well as keeping skin looking young, smooth, even, and healthy for as long as possible.

Supergoop! also stresses that anything that emits heat (your hair dryer, nail-drying lamps, etc.) also emits infrared-a radiation (IRA) which can wreak havoc on skin by forming free radicals that deteriorate collagen. We can’t confirm that your blow dryer or flat iron is causing you to age (in all likelihood that’s not the case), but certainly pollution in the air is of more concern. Either way, to combat external causes of aging, it’s important to supply skin with ingredients that can offset the damage, and Supergoop! does just that by including antioxidants in their formulas. Unfortunately, they don’t always use a high concentration of them, but some is better than none. Still, this isn’t an inexpensive line, so you’re well within reason to expect more than just a dusting of antioxidants.

We appreciate that Supergoop! strives to produce sunscreens whose lightweight, non-greasy textures easily absorb into skin and don’t feel like traditional sunscreens. Such pleasing textures mean people will be more likely to apply sunscreen on a daily basis (sun protection only works if you remember to use it). In that respect, Supergoop! succeeds brilliantly. The majority of their products feel weightless and have either a quick dry-down or pleasantly smooth absorption. Now that’s a nice change of pace from your run-of-the-mill sunscreens!

The one claim they fail to live up to with multiple products is formulating with non-irritating ingredients. The line wants you to know their products do NOT contain parabens, oxybenzone, or synthetic fragrances, yet several Supergoop! products contain ingredients you should be concerned about due to their documented potential to irritate skin. Irritation is bad for skin whether the ingredients are natural or synthetic.

Specific to parabens, research has made it abundantly clear that parabens are safe as used but tells a different story about fragrant plant oils such as eucalyptus and lemon oils—both ingredients Supergoop! does use, seemingly without knowledge of how they could hurt skin.

To further clarify, oxybenzone and parabens are nothing to be afraid. Still, we realize that many consumers have been led to believe that those ingredients are bad so it’s understandable that Supergoop! avoids the issue altogether by omitting them—but then why include such fragrant ingredients when fragrance-free is best for everyone’s skin?

The bottom line: This sun-care-themed brand is one of the few to offer an entire lineup of products that offer broad spectrum sun protection. However, not all the formulas are worthwhile given their potential for irritation. See individual reviews for a play-by-play on which products earn our seal approval.

Goop is a good name

I don't like the taste or the consistency. The product in the tube I purchased was clear. I can only hope it works since it was pricey and I can't return it.

Love the feel and look

I love this product. I had a deep gouge in my lower lip that wouldn't heal because every time I smiled or ate, etc, it would re-open. I was using my Paula's choice lip and body treatment, which I've been a fan of for years, but it still wasn't healing. After over 2 mos. of no progress I started using Super goop and the healing started. I've been using it 2 weeks now, along with my PC lip and body at night and it's now almost healed after being an open wound for 3 mos.

Beautypedia Team Response

Hi there!  The Acai Fusion does not have spearmint but the Mint Fusion does.

Great chapstick!

Very happy with this product! Nice texture/smell, and I really like the packaging. Tint is not noticeable at all, which is a plus for me. The best part is that it is not bad tasting like other SPF chapsticks I have used.

My FAVORITE for years!

This is my all time, hands down, favorite daytime lip balm. It slips on like a dream, protects my lips from the sun, and gives me the perfect pinky sheen that's moisturizing without being too slick or shiny. It kind of reminds me of Christian Dior's Creme de Rose... except better! It's better formulated, waaaay more affordable, more moisturizing, and contains more SPF. Loooove!!
