AcneFree's Sport Clear Skin System is meant for active people who want a daily anti-acne routine with multiple benefits. It includes 3-in-1 Acne Sport Cleanser (4 fl. oz.), All Night Hydrating Acne Treatment (2 fl. oz.), and 12 of the company's 3-in-1 Acne Sport Wipes. Like all of AcneFree's kits, the products are a mixed bag that fails to offer a proven solution for managing acne, whether you're active or not. In fact, there is no difference in treating acne, whether you have a sedentary or active lifestyle.
The 3-in-1 Acne Sport Cleanser is medicated with the proven anti-acne ingredient salicylic acid (also known as BHA), but in a cleanser this ingredient's benefit is rinsed down the drain and, therefore, far less effective. The same is true for the antiseptic benzalkonium chloride, but this ingredient would be ineffective anyway because in this formula it is combined with a sulfonate cleansing agent, which destroys its antibacterial benefit (Source: Preservatives for Cosmetics, Second Edition, Allured Publishing, Steinberg, David C., 2006, page 55). Moreover, the small amount of research associating benzalkonium chloride with acne is dated; it's definitely no match for a leave-on product with salicylic acid or a topical disinfectant with benzoyl peroxide.
All Night Hydrating Treatment is a very good topical disinfectant that kills acne-causing bacteria with 3% benzoyl peroxide. The lightweight lotion also contains tea tree oil, but not enough to provide antibacterial benefit. It does contain some good soothing agents to reduce redness.
The kit is rounded out with 3-in-1 Acne Sport Wipes, which provide minimal cleansing but do contain 2% salicylic acid. That would be incredibly helpful and convenient, but the pH of these wipes is too high for the salicylic acid, a pH-sensitive ingredient, to function as an exfoliant.
The wipes also contain a preservative (methylisothiazolinone) that is not recommended for use in leave-on products. It can be sensitizing, so you'll want to rinse this solution from your skin, which defeats their convenience feature for the active set.
- Contains benzoyl peroxide.
- Salicylic acid in the cleanser is rinsed from your skin before it has a chance to work.
- The wipes contain a sensitizing preservative.
- The pH is too high for the salicylic acid to exfoliate (which is what helps breakouts).

AcneFree is a small group of skin-care products sold in sets. As you may have guessed from the brand name, this is a line that's all about treating acne. You'll find this brand in most major drugstores, but it's not the acne treatment system to beat!
Owned by University Medical Pharmaceuticals, you'd think these products would be a slam-dunk for acne, but they're not. Although the kits contain some good products, all of them feature at least one product that's not effective for its intended purpose or contains irritating ingredients that will make your acne worse.
Just because the company claims these kits (systems) are the #1 best-selling in America doesn't mean they work; rather, it means that a lot of consumers with acne are buying the wrong products. We understand the frustration of struggling with breakouts. You want something that works to get rid of them, and the faster the better. It would be great if AcneFree could make good on all of its promises, but it simply doesn't, at least not 100%.
