Review Overview

If you prefer to use an effective AHA product in pad form rather than a cream, gel, or lotion, then this is a product worth considering - though it's not without drawbacks you need to know about. The AHA content is higher than usual, but this is still an option if your skin can tolerate this amount; however, this percentage of AHA is definitely not for everyone and the research on daily use of AHA concentrations above 10% is lacking. If you’re one of those people who believes that if a little is good then a lot is better, or if you have very advanced sun damage, then this is an OK option.

It is good that Alpha Hydrox included anti-irritants, but not so good that they formulated with methylchloroisothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone as the preservatives in the formula, because they're contraindicated for use in leave-on products. Still, you can swipe a pad over your face, let the solution sit for several minutes, and then rinse with water to remove. Otherwise, because of the preservatives used, we do not recommend leaving the pad solution on your face overnight.

Brand Overview

Alpha Hydrox At-A-Glance

Strengths: A good selection of well-priced, effective AHA products utilizing glycolic acid; also excels with skin-lightening and retinol products; a small but workable selection of cleansers.

Weaknesses:A couple of moisturizers with oxygenating ingredients; reliance on jar packaging for some products with antioxidants.

Known primarily for their well-formulated AHA products, Alpha Hydrox got an impressive image update recently. Although the improvements were more visual and packaging-related than formulary-driven, the fact remains that Alpha Hydrox has a formidable range of effective AHA products, all with definitively researched glycolic acid. Kudos to the company for continuing to be direct about the AHA content (and pH) of their exfoliants, something most other lines selling AHA products prefer to keep a mystery. Should the folks behind this brand choose to go back to the drawing board once again, they would do well to reconsider their current jar packaging if they intend to keep adding antioxidants and other beneficial ingredients to their efficacious but still predominantly basic products. Until then, you can rely on Alpha Hydrox for supplying AHA products that really work, and a few other surprises too, all affordably priced and readily available.

Good, but follow recommendations for use!

Good product for skin issues that you think can benefit from a high-level AHA exfoliant. I use them two nights a week, leave the solution on my face for about 5 minutes, then wipe off any remaining solution. I consider my skin "sensitive", but so far I haven't noticed much irritation from these. But it's important to follow the usage recommendations in Paula's review and on the product label. These aren't for daily use, and leaving the solution on for hours will probably hurt more than help.
