10% AHA Enhanced Lotion is the one of the best AHA bargains from Alpha Hydrox (certainly a standout among drugstore brands). The moisturizing lotion formula contains 10% glycolic acid, it's fragrance- and irritant-free, plus it contains a handful of additional beneficial ingredients, making it an effective option for exfoliating normal to dry skin and earning it a spot on our Best AHAs list!

Alpha hydroxy acids in concentrations of higher than 4% and at a pH between 3 and 4 help damaged, dull skin appear more even and radiant by exfoliating excess skill cells that have accumulated on skin's outermost layers. Since Alpha Hydrox included a generous 10% of the well-researched alpha hydroxy acid (glycolic acid) at a pH of 4, this ensures effective exfoliation can occur, revealing younger-looking, more luminous skin.

Although 10% AHA Enhanced Lotion contains several emollients and thickeners, this leave-on exfoliant isn't heavy or greasy. As with any AHA product at a 10% concentration, start slow when incorporating it in your routine and make sure to wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30+, as AHAs can increase your sensitivity to unprotected sun exposure.

10% AHA Enhanced Lotion is also enriched with a smattering of additional beneficial ingredients. Alpha Hydrox included petrolatum, a rich emollient that helps skin recover from damage and reduces irritation. Lastly, they added the skin-identical ingredient stearic acid and the skin-healing antioxidant, vitamin E. Best of all, this product is packaged stably to protect any light- or air-sensitive ingredients and ensure their effectiveness will last.

Alpha Hydrox earned our kudos with 10% AHA Enhanced Lotion. They produced an affordable, readily available product that contains ingredients that actually do what they claim to and avoided including any potential irritants, fragrance, or alcohol common in many other drugstore alpha hydroxy acid options.

Pros:
  • Has a high amount of glycolic acid at a proper pH for exfoliation to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • A drugstore beauty bargain!
  • Contains anti-irritants, antioxidants, and skin-identical ingredients in stable packaging.
Cons:
  • None.

Brand Overview

Alpha Hydrox At-A-Glance

Strengths: A good selection of well-priced, effective AHA products utilizing glycolic acid; also excels with skin-lightening and retinol products; a small but workable selection of cleansers.

Weaknesses:A couple of moisturizers with oxygenating ingredients; reliance on jar packaging for some products with antioxidants.

Known primarily for their well-formulated AHA products, Alpha Hydrox got an impressive image update recently. Although the improvements were more visual and packaging-related than formulary-driven, the fact remains that Alpha Hydrox has a formidable range of effective AHA products, all with definitively researched glycolic acid. Kudos to the company for continuing to be direct about the AHA content (and pH) of their exfoliants, something most other lines selling AHA products prefer to keep a mystery. Should the folks behind this brand choose to go back to the drawing board once again, they would do well to reconsider their current jar packaging if they intend to keep adding antioxidants and other beneficial ingredients to their efficacious but still predominantly basic products. Until then, you can rely on Alpha Hydrox for supplying AHA products that really work, and a few other surprises too, all affordably priced and readily available.
