Normally, Alpha Hydrox gets the critical issue of pH levels right for their AHA products. But with this hand cream, the pH of 5 is too high for the lactic acid it contains to exfoliate, not to mention that 3% lactic acid isn't a significant amount if the goal is exfoliation. Lower amounts of lactic acid (like this) have water-binding benefit, but on balance this hand cream's formula is astonishingly basic. We haven't seen an ingredient list for a skin-care product from a reputable company this ordinary and antiquated in some time. It is just water, glycerin, wax, and preservatives.
If you're going to use a specialized product to remedy dry hands, this isn't the one to consider. Please see our list of Best Hand Creams/Lotions for our top picks. Also keep in mind that you can use a well-formulated facial or body moisturizer on your hands, too.
Enriched with Lactic AHA, this super-creamy formula penetrates quickly to protect, nourish, and moisturize the skin. Effective, immediate, long-lasting relief for even seriously dry, chapped hands. Supreme softening and surface smoothing. Unusually rich and silky but not at all greasy. Leaves skin feeling soft and smooth. Smooths rough cuticles too.
Water, Glycerin, Cetearyl Alcohol, Lactic Acid, Ammonium Hydroxide, Sodium Cetearyl Sulfate, Dimethicone, Propylene Glycol, Diazolidinyl Urea, Methylparaben, Propylparaben
Known primarily for their well-formulated AHA products, Alpha Hydrox got an impressive image update recently. Although the improvements were more visual and packaging-related than formulary-driven, the fact remains that Alpha Hydrox has a formidable range of effective AHA products, all with definitively researched glycolic acid. Kudos to the company for continuing to be direct about the AHA content (and pH) of their exfoliants, something most other lines selling AHA products prefer to keep a mystery. Should the folks behind this brand choose to go back to the drawing board once again, they would do well to reconsider their current jar packaging if they intend to keep adding antioxidants and other beneficial ingredients to their efficacious but still predominantly basic products. Until then, you can rely on Alpha Hydrox for supplying AHA products that really work, and a few other surprises too, all affordably priced and readily available.
