Ingrown hairs are a literal and figurative pain in the face, and something many men experience due to shaving or simply by virtue of how their beard grows. Ingrown Hair Treatment purports to be the solution, but instead it stands a very good chance of making matters worse!

On the plus side, the formula's blend of the AHA glycolic acid and the BHA salicylic acid is able to exfoliate skin because the pH is low enough, and exfoliation is critical to improving (and potentially eliminating) ingrown hairs. However, there are better products for exfoliation, as we explain in the next paragraph. Check out our list of Best Exfoliants.

The big drawback with this product (aside from the high price) is that the formula is alcohol-based and also contains fragrant lavender oil. Both of these ingredients cause trouble by irritating the skin, and neither can soothe or calm skin in any way. Anthony Logistics claims this product is "moisturizing, not drying," but alcohol isn't moisturizing in the least! See More Info for details on why alcohol and lavender are among skin's enemies.

Pros:
  • Blend of AHA and BHA ingredients can exfoliate skin, which helps reduce ingrown hairs.
Cons:
  • Expensive.
  • High amount of alcohol is drying and irritating.
  • Lavender oil is a fragrant irritant.
More Info:

Alcohol in skin-care products: Alcohol in skin-care products causes dryness and free-radical damage, and impairs the skin's ability to heal. The irritation it causes damages healthy collagen production and can stimulate oil production at the base of the pore, making oily skin worse (Sources: Biochimica et Biophysica Acta, May 2012, pages 1,410–1,419; Alcoholism, Clinical and Experimental Research, January 2011, pages 83–90; "Skin Care—From the Inside Out and Outside In," Tufts Daily, April 1, 2002; eMedicine Journal, May 8, 2002, volume 3, number 5, www.emedicine.com; Cutis, February 2001, pages 25–27; Contact Dermatitis, January 1996, pages 12–16; and http://pubs.niaaa.nih.gov/publications/arh27-4/277-284.htm).

Lavender oil in skin-care products: Research indicates that components of lavender, specifically linalool, can be cytotoxic, which means that topical application causes skin-cell death (Source: Cell Proliferation, June 2004, pages 221–229). Lavender leaves contain camphor, which is a known skin irritant. Because the fragrance constituents in lavender oil oxidize when exposed to air, lavender oil is a pro-oxidant, and this enhanced oxidation increases its irritancy on skin (Source: Contact Dermatitis, September 2008, pages 143–150). Lavender oil is the most potent form, and even small amounts of it (0.25% or less) are problematic. Although it's fine as an aromatherapy agent for inhalation or relaxation, it is a must to avoid in skin-care products. (Sources: Psychiatry Research, February 2007, pages 89–96; and www.naturaldatabase.com).

A gel complex of glycolic, salicylic and phytic acids gently remove dead skin, helps fight bacteria and frees the hair. Moisturizing, not drying. Willowherb and lavender soothe and calm the skin. In combination these help prevent ingrown hairs.

Water Purified, SD Alcohol, Propylene Glycol, Glycolic Acid, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Ammonium Hydroxide, Phytic Acid, Salicylic Acid, Tetrasodium EDTA, Blue 1, Epilobium Angustifolium Flower/Leaf/Stem Extract, Saccharide Isomerate, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Yellow 5.

There really is an Anthony behind the Anthony Logistics brand—Anthony Sosnick, who began this men's line in 2000. In some ways, the brand opened up a whole new world of skin care for guys, because it went beyond the soap/shave/aftershave routine that for years was the only widespread option for men's grooming.

Now sold at major retailers, such as Sephora, Ulta, and numerous men's salons throughout the United States, Anthony Logistics offers men's skin care from head to toe. As impressive as that is, there's a catch: Most of the products contain one or more irritating ingredients that won't lead a man to his best-looking, healthiest skin. In that sense, Anthony Logistics differs little from almost every other men's product line, and that's a shame because clearly this brand has some good potential (and good intentions).

According to the company, their products are formulated with ingredients specific to a man's skin, but that claim is completely bogus. The fact is there are no special ingredients men need that women don't and vice versa. Yes, there are some differences between men's and women's skin but those differences don't have anything to do with how you take care of your skin. Sun damage, wrinkles, acne, rosacea, dry skin, oily skin, large pores, and on and on should be treated the same way, regardless of your gender. Men's products don't need to be stronger, because all stronger typically means is more irritating, and no one's skin needs that!

As mentioned above, most of the Anthony Logistics products contain ingredients that are extremely problematic for anyone's skin. Ingredients like alcohol, peppermint, eucalyptus, and many of the other irritants strewn throughout this line are seriously bad for skin. (Guys, skin care isn't about portraying a tough "no pain, no gain" mentality.) The limited number of well-formulated products makes this a less than logical line for any man.
