Review Overview

This is a very good water-soluble cleanser suitable for all skin types, except sensitive. It does a reasonably good job of removing makeup, though you may need to use a washcloth with it to remove long-wearing formulas. This isn’t recommended for sensitive skin because it contains fragrance. Although all skin types do better with fragrance-free products, those with sensitive skin should take extra care to avoid fragranced products. See our list of Best Products for Sensitive Skin

  • Gentle formula cleanses without drying.
  • Rinses without leaving a residue.

  • Not adept at removing long-wearing makeup without the aid of a washcloth.
  • Contains fragrance, making it a tricky product for those with sensitive skin.

Soap-free cleanser eliminates impurities and excess sebum without stripping the skin.

Brand Overview

Eau Thermale Avene At-a-Glance

Strengths: Some excellent cleansers; well-formulated sunscreens; moisturizers that help to treat very dry, fragile skin; praiseworthy lip balms.

Weaknesses: Can be on the pricey side.

Eau Thermale Avene’s most prominent claim to fame is the thermal spring water in its products, which the brand maintains is curative due to both historical and scientific evidence. Unfortunately, there isn’t much evidence that we could locate that was in the form of published, peer-reviewed research. Without the research, thermal water is ultimately more about marketing than fact—however, the good news is whatever the factualness of their claims about the ingredient, at least thermal water isn’t going to harm your skin in any way.

Thermal water aside, what is clear is that Avene’s goal is to provide formulas for those who battle sensitive skin concerns. With that in mind, we can say there are quite a few successes among the brand’s range of offerings. There are also a few products we saw as missteps for reasons noted in their respective reviews.

Overall, Eau Thermale Avene’s more praiseworthy qualities is the range of options provided for those that have exceptionally sensitive skin, i.e. who may have been unable to tolerate more advanced anti-aging formulas. While we would have liked to see more in the way of complexity of anti-aging formulas from Avene (and fewer claims about thermal water), the particular direction the brand takes towards skincare is one that has its audience.

good gentle facial wash

I have sensitive skin and have no issue with this face wash- it provides a gentle wash, with a nice lather which you don't often get in a soap-free formula. As Beautypedia notes, it isn't going to clear all the stubborn eye makeup, but it's a great daily wash. (I use this one in the mornings when I'm makeup free, and a cleansing cloth with facial butter in evenings.) It's a great soap-free formula if you're in the market for one.

Current Holy Grail facewash

My current Holy Grail facewash as of 27/05/14. Expensive upfront compared to others, but foams easily with a small amount so it lasts for a long time. It doesn't leave my skin feeling stripped, either - just cleansed and refreshed. For me, it's also gentle enough to use around my eye area. I have oily, acne-prone skin.

leaves unpleasant tightness

I have oily blemish-prone and sensitive skin and tried everything in my 15years+ of battle with the imprefections. This is a good cleanser: it clears all make-up and oily build-up and doesn't irritate. My skin didn't dry out or flake, like with most other products for acne-prone skin. Yet, even though there are no obvious signs of dryness, my skin feels very tight right after washing. Applying moisturizer re-balances my skin back to normal. It is very efficient - just a few drops is enough.
