With summer in full swing and fall just around the corner, there’s been no shortage of new makeup launches. But before you run out and buy the next best thing, peek through our CliffsNotes on July’s Best and Worst Makeup—it might just save you some time and money!

New Makeup Standouts: Four Star Reviews

Between our full line review of Charlotte Tilbury’s cosmetics and other praiseworthy launches, we were in makeup testing heaven this July. Here are a few of our top-rated faves.

  • Charlotte Tilbury K.I.S.S.I.N.G. Lipstick ($32) – If full-bodied lip color is what you’re after, prepare to fall in love with this lipstick. The rich, creamy texture coats lips in dense, saturated color and comes in a bevy of gorgeous shades. It’s a splurge worthy buy for lipstick fanatics!
  • Anastasia of Beverly Hills Waterproof Crème Color ($18) – This gel eyeliner quickly became a favorite among our staffers due to its outstanding color payoff and smooth application. The cherry on top? Its waterproof, worry-free wear is great for summer and beyond!
  • Charlotte Tilbury Brow Lift Three-Way Shape, Lift & Shade Tool ($30) – Between the retractable pencil to fill brows, the spoolie brush to groom hairs in to place, and a highlighting powder to polish off the look, Brow Lift delivers everything you need for perfectly sculpted brows all in one, easy to use tool. Thank you for making our lives a little easier C.T.!
  • Urban Decay Naked Smoky Eyeshadow Palette ($54) – Urban Decay’s Naked eyeshadow palettes always garner quite a bit of buzz, and we’re happy to report this one lives up to the hype. The versatile mix of soft and deep colors in varying finishes work beautifully to create a smoky eye for day or night, and if you’re looking to switch up your eyeshadow this fall, this palette is a great way to do it!
  • Charlotte Tilbury's Light Wonder Youth-Boosting Perfect Skin Foundation ($45) – Dry skin has met its match with this moisturizing, dewy finish foundation. Its natural looking coverage resists settling into pores and fine lines and is just enough to conceal minor imperfections. You look like you, but better!

The No-So-Great Makeup Launches: Two-Star (or Lower) Reviews

Put your wallet away. These makeup launches offered subpar to mediocre results.

  • La Roche-Posay Rosaliac CC Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 30 ($38.99) – This CC cream is marketed to people with sensitive skin (including rosacea), but its strongly fragranced, perfume-like formula actually increases the likelihood of irritation and redness. If that’s not reason enough to dissuade you, the slightly orange cast of its singular “universal” shade might be.
  • M.A.C. Retro Matte Lipstick ($16) – M.A.C. is a cult fave for lipstick aficionados, but Retro Matte Lipstick lands in the dud pile. Why? After a couple hours of wear it begins to ball up, and when it fades it does so unevenly, with small chunks of lipstick coming off. Stick to M.A.C.’s top-rated lipsticks for tried and true results.
  • Charlotte Tilbury Eyes to Mesmerise Long-Lasting Easy Cream Eyeshadow ($32) – Despite its “long-lasting” name, this is one of the most crease-prone eyeshadows we’ve tested in a while. Even when worn over an eyeshadow primer, it still had issues. So not worth the $32 (or even $5 really)!
  • Sonia Kashuk Liquid Light Concealer ($8.99) – Though this starts out well by providing natural-looking coverage as an under eye concealer, after a couple of hours of wear, it begins to crease and emphasize fine lines around the eyes. Sonia Kashuk has some great products—this just isn’t one of them.
