The idea of color correcting (that is, neutralizing facial discolorations by applying contrasting makeup shades over them) isn't new, but recently it's made a big-time comeback. The trend has sparked a number of brands to come out with their versions of color correctors, with mixed results. Becca's Backlight Targeted Colour Corrector gets a lot right when it comes to this concept, which is why it gets two big thumbs up from us!

If you're familiar with Becca, you'll notice the packaging of Backlight Targeted Colour Corrector is reminiscent of its top-rated Under Eye Brightening Corrector, and for good reason. It's essentially the same fragrance-free product, but differing in their colors (a comparison check of the ingredient list shows this is the case). Like Under Eye Brightening Corrector, this comes in a glass pot-style container similar to gel eyeliners.

Also like Under Eye Brightening Corrector, Backlight Targeted Colour Corrector has an initial emollient texture that dries down to a satin finish (because of its emollient texture, this isn't ideal for those with breakout-prone skin).

This comes in four distinctive colors designed to target specific imperfections: The orangey Peach (for brown spots), the mint-green Pistachio (for redness), the light purple Violet (for sallow skin), and the very bright red Papaya (for purple-blue dark circles).

Each of these is brightly colored in the pot, and somewhat intimidating. A quick tap of the shades on your face finds that the colors initially show up boldly on skin, too, though they can be sheered out. Still, you'll see some color remaining no matter how well you blend, so this is definitely not a product meant for bare skin (and Becca doesn't recommend using it this way, either). Becca suggests applying a full-coverage concealer or foundation over these correctors.

We will admit, prior to putting on our foundation over these intensely colored correctors, we worried that the result would be clownish or artificial-looking! When we tried this, we put on all four colors at one time, resulting in orange cheeks, green on the sides of our nose, a purple forehead and chin, and bright red patches under our eyes. The good news is that no matter how silly this might look, it really works.

Though Becca does suggest going with full coverage, we used a medium-coverage foundation and had great results (though we will say with anything lighter than that, you would see the color correctors underneath). Once we applied the foundation over the correctors, we were surprised by the results. True to Becca's claims, we found these canceled out redness, brown spots, dark circles, and dullness. The correctors performed beautifully under foundation without decreasing its wear time or causing creasing or fading. In fact, it wore so well throughout the workday that all we noticed was how even-toned our skin appeared. "Color" us impressed!

If you've been avoiding color correctors because you were worried they'd appear clownish or highlight rather than diminish imperfections, then Becca's Backlight Targeted Colour Corrector is one to consider, at least if you pair it with a medium- to full-coverage foundation. Thanks to its performance and wear time, it gets an enthusiastic recommendation from us!

Pros:
  • Emollient, fragrance-free formula dries to a satin finish.
  • Colors effectively neutralize the specific discolorations they're designed to treat.
  • Wears well under foundation without causing creasing or fading.
Cons:
  • None.

Brand Overview

Becca At-A-Glance

Australian import Becca is a complete line of color cosmetics from makeup artist Rebecca Morrice Williams. As the story goes, Rebecca, like so many women, was having difficulty finding the perfect foundation. It seems her professional experience making up women of varying skin tones and preferences shared one truth: all women wanted perfect skin. This set Williams on her path to creating what would become the Becca line.

While there are a number of excellent foundations here, what seems to have catapulted the brand onto the map is their numerous highlighter products. From liquids to powders, there are an incredible range of options in their luminizer categories, and many are superb.

Surveying the rest of this line revealed that Williams not only did her homework for foundation shades, the eyeshadows are amazingly silky, and many of their products for lips and cheeks are exemplary. Lastly, almost all of the makeup brushes from Becca are aces, and the options plentiful, especially for eye designs.

Strengths: Excellent concealers, foundations, highlighters and eyeshadows; good lip gloss; several outstanding brushes.

Weaknesses: Beats us, this is a strong collection of products.

Becca is available at Sephora, Ulta and via their Web site.
