It's no secret that Becca has led the way in creating unique, sophisticated takes on the concepts of highlighters and luminizers. With that in mind, it's no surprise that their new Backlighting Primer Filter is a very good twist on the concept. Becca recommends applying this all over, under foundation, with the claim that it blurs imperfections and gives skin a radiant finish.

As a primer, if you have normal to dry skin, you'll find this lightweight lotion provides a beautiful healthy glow that isn't the least bit sparkly or shimmery. It has a light amount of moisture, which is helpful for applying foundation over, but it doesn't make a substantial difference in wear time (nor does it claim to). Rather, this is all about the visual effect it provides.

If you have oily skin or are blemish prone, you likely won't appreciate this "all over glow." Not only can such radiance highlight texture irregularities in skin, but also oily areas don't need any more "radiance" than they have naturally! However, everyone, no matter the skin type, can consider this an option as one of the more impressive highlighters that we've seen from any brand, including Becca.

When selectively applied, its translucent, subtle opalescence strikes a wonderful balance that lends itself to a wide range of skin tones. Whether you have a fair, medium or deeper skin tone, Backlighting Primer Filter resists looking overly warm or cool.

Packaged in a frosted glass bottle with a pump dispenser, this does include a small amount of fragrance that doesn't linger on skin, and shouldn't be a problem for most. However, if you have sensitivity concerns, we would suggest trying spot testing a sample of this first, or considering any of the fragrance-free alternatives Becca provides.

If you have normal to dry skin, you can absolutely consider Backlighting Primer Filter as an option to impart an attractive radiance to skin. If that's not your skin type, we would still recommend this as one of the better "subtle" highlighters available today, especially for the fact it manages to work for a wide range of skin tones and isn't shimmery or glittery (even in daylight).

Pros:
  • Unique formula that works for a wide range of skin tones.
  • Works well as an all-over radiance booster for those with normal to dry skin.
  • Also an impressive opalescent highlighter for any skin type.
Cons:
  • Contains a small amount of fragrance.

Brand Overview

Becca At-A-Glance

Australian import Becca is a complete line of color cosmetics from makeup artist Rebecca Morrice Williams. As the story goes, Rebecca, like so many women, was having difficulty finding the perfect foundation. It seems her professional experience making up women of varying skin tones and preferences shared one truth: all women wanted perfect skin. This set Williams on her path to creating what would become the Becca line.

While there are a number of excellent foundations here, what seems to have catapulted the brand onto the map is their numerous highlighter products. From liquids to powders, there are an incredible range of options in their luminizer categories, and many are superb.

Surveying the rest of this line revealed that Williams not only did her homework for foundation shades, the eyeshadows are amazingly silky, and many of their products for lips and cheeks are exemplary. Lastly, almost all of the makeup brushes from Becca are aces, and the options plentiful, especially for eye designs.

Strengths: Excellent concealers, foundations, highlighters and eyeshadows; good lip gloss; several outstanding brushes.

Weaknesses: Beats us, this is a strong collection of products.

Becca is available at Sephora, Ulta and via their Web site.
