Well known for their impressive Skin Perfector collection of luminizers, the Ever-Matte Poreless Priming Perfector proves that Becca Cosmetics is just as adept at preventing shine as they are at adding it. Deceptively simple in appearance, this excels at providing an immediate matte effect that lasts and helps minimize the appearance of pores.
Housed in a plastic squeeze tube, this fragrance-free formula has an initially thick texture that quickly softens as it warms upon contact with skin. Unlike many primer and mattifying products, Ever-Matte Poreless Priming Perfector is water-based, which aids in its lightweight feel on skin. (Primers that are silicone based can feel heavier, but there are also silicone-based primers that feel weightless once set.)
This is a surprisingly basic formula—primarily water and, from the extent of its powdery finish, a high amount of the clay-derived absorbent magnesium aluminum silicate. Not only does it immediately mattify skin, it also has the potential to keep shine at bay for several hours. (It does this so well, that if your skin type isn't oily to very oily, you may find this mattifying to the point of feeling uncomfortably dry.)
According to Becca, Ever-Matte Poreless Priming Perfector may be used in two ways—either as a traditional pre-foundation primer, or over makeup as needed throughout the day. In our experience, this worked especially well pre-makeup, but its degree of success over foundation varied depending on the type you wore. (This worked well over liquids and creams, but less so over powder foundations.)
We should note that when applied properly as a primer, it actually wasn't necessary to use it again at any point during our workday. We put it to the test on our very oily skin staffers, and they found that it held its matte finish for 6+ hours under most foundations—but easily lasted 8+ hours if worn under a long-wearing, matte foundation.
While this works over any daytime moisturizer with SPF, when applied over a dry finish, mineral-sunscreen formula, its absorbent abilities are seriously "boosted." When worn in this way, we found that it was almost too mattifying! However, if you have oily to very oily skin, this is a wonderful "problem" to have!
(This assumes your skincare routine isn't making your oily skin worse—for example, if you're using an overly emollient moisturizer, this product won't perform to its full potential.)
Ever-Matte Poreless Priming Perfector earned its rating for its exceptional performance as a mattifying product—far exceeding our expectations. As we mentioned, this formula is best for oily to very oily skin, if minor shine is your concern, this will likely be too good at its job for your needs. If you battle persistently shiny skin, however, we recommend checking this out at your local Sephora or Ulta store.
Application Tips: Becca is very specific in their instructions for this product, and with good reason—due to its incredibly absorbent formula, things go awry quickly if you don't follow them. After you apply your daytime moisturizer with SPF, allow it to dry for a few minutes.
Dispense about a pea-sized amount of Ever-Matte Poreless Priming Perfector, warm it for a moment in your hands and then press-pat onto the areas of your face where oily skin is an issue—but do not rub. Seriously, don't do it. Rubbing it (or applying it with a sponge or brush) often results in it balling up. Then, allow one or two minutes to dry before applying any other makeup as usual. You're all set not to shine (but feel free to let your endearing personality shine through)!
- Impressively matte finish (in the words of one staffer after using it, "blotting my face was like blotting a pane of glass").
- Its shine-free finish lasts several hours.
- Fragrance free.
- There is a slight learning curve to applying this correctly (seriously, don't rub).
