Even though they sell many products, some makeup companies have signature items that arguably put them on the map. For M.A.C., it's lipstick, for NARS, it's powder blushes, and for Becca, it's highlighters. After trying the brand's Shimmering Skin Perfector (Pressed) we can certainly see why—it's a standout among standouts, which is why it easily earns our highest rating.

Shimmering Skin Perfector (Pressed) comes in a brown, mirrored compact with a brushed metal accent on the lid. Inside is one of the most finely-milled powder products we've seen—Becca calls the texture "creamy", and we agree. It's smooth and buttery, and easy to pick up with a brush. We hardly had to put the bristles in the pan to get a good amount of product on them!

The powder is very blendable and as advertised, imparts a luminous glow to skin instead of obvious shine or sparkle (though those with oily skin might find this adds shine where they don't want it, and this is by no means an oil-absorbing formula). One thing we need to point out: A little goes a very long way, so if this seems pricey to you, just know that you'll get your money's worth.

Shimmering Skin Perfector (Pressed) is among the more heavily pigmented Becca highlighting options, and only a small amount brushed onto skin is enough to get the appearance of a healthy glow. If you apply this as you would a blush, you can easily overdo it. As with most highlighters, if you apply them heavily they're much more likely to emphasize the appearance of pores, which is the case with this one, as well.

Shimmering Skin Perfector (Pressed) wears well throughout a standard workday (about eight hours) without fading. (You'll notice you have luminous skin long after the initial application!) It comes in a good range of colors, including pearlescent, golden, and coppery shades that work for skin tones ranging from fair to medium to deep.

Because of its exceptional texture, high-level performance, and the fact that it will practically last forever, we give Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector our top rating. It's among our favorites if you're in the market for a powder highlighter! (And many people are, because pressed powder highlighters tend to be easier to use than cream and liquid highlighters.)

Note: The size listed for this review references the size of the majority of the Shimmering Skin Perfector (Pressed) products (0.28 fl. oz.). The "Pearl" shade is slightly smaller, with a weight of 0.25 fl. oz.

Pros:
  • Powder has a creamy texture that's easy to pick up with a brush and apply.
  • Imparts a luminous glow to skin.
  • Highly pigmented, so a little goes a long way.
  • Wears well without fading.
  • Good range of shades for fair to deep skin tones.
  • Fragrance free.
Cons:
  • Can emphasize pores when applied heavily.

Refined luminosity in any light. This formula features ultra-fine luminescent pearls that absorb, reflect and refract light so your natural glow is never lost. Unlike the traditional pressed powder method, which simply mixes and compresses dry ingredients, this unique process blends pigments with proprietary liquid binders, resulting in unparalleled, creamy application with balanced color dispersion.

Brand Overview

Becca At-A-Glance

Australian import Becca is a complete line of color cosmetics from makeup artist Rebecca Morrice Williams. As the story goes, Rebecca, like so many women, was having difficulty finding the perfect foundation. It seems her professional experience making up women of varying skin tones and preferences shared one truth: all women wanted perfect skin. This set Williams on her path to creating what would become the Becca line.

While there are a number of excellent foundations here, what seems to have catapulted the brand onto the map is their numerous highlighter products. From liquids to powders, there are an incredible range of options in their luminizer categories, and many are superb.

Surveying the rest of this line revealed that Williams not only did her homework for foundation shades, the eyeshadows are amazingly silky, and many of their products for lips and cheeks are exemplary. Lastly, almost all of the makeup brushes from Becca are aces, and the options plentiful, especially for eye designs.

Strengths: Excellent concealers, foundations, highlighters and eyeshadows; good lip gloss; several outstanding brushes.

Weaknesses: Beats us, this is a strong collection of products.

Becca is available at Sephora, Ulta and via their Web site.
