When you think of makeup highlighters, a product with shimmer, sheen, or glitter probably comes to mind. Benefit aims to change that thinking with its Dandelion Shy Beam Matte Liquid Highlighter. Yes, you read correctly, a matte highlighter! While it's not as original as Benefit makes it out to be, Dandelion Shy Beam delivers on many of its claims.

Dandelion Shy Beam Matte Liquid Highlighter is packaged similarly to Benefit's other liquid highlighters. It's housed in a plastic bottle with a twist-off top and a small brush (similar to a nail polish brush) attached. Inside is a fragrance free, light-salmon pink liquid that's designed to be dotted onto the face in areas you'd like to highlight, such as cheekbones and the bridge of the nose.

The easy-to-blend formula dries quickly to a soft matte, though not chalky, finish that doesn't emphasize pores. So how's the highlighting effect? We found that on fair skin tones it was hard to see any color or difference in appearance at all—there was a slight lightening of skin when it was applied liberally, but the effect is essentially that of applying a matte concealer to the same areas. We found that on light skin tones, it did a good job of helping neutralize the appearance of under eye circles—a benefit that Benefit doesn't mention!

Dandelion Shy Beam Matte Liquid Highlighter truly shines (though only in the figurative sense!) on medium to deep skin tones, where it serves to highlight key areas of the face without appearing ashy. It can also be used effectively on these skin tones for the "strobing" technique of highlighting that's become popular on social media, and in all cases, it lasts through a standard work day with minimal creasing or fading.

Though it's not as versatile or unique as claimed, we found that Benefit's Dandelion Shy Beam Matte Liquid Highlighter does have enough positive qualities (especially for deeper skin tones) that it's a product we recommend if you like your highlighters shine-free!

Note: Benefit's claim that this product is "perfect for contouring" can be confusing, because this isn't the type or the color of product anyone should use to contour. Highlighting can be part of the contouring process, but you'd never use a highlighter to add depth or shadow key areas of the face.

As with most lines, there are enough missteps and problem products to shop carefully, but Benefit shines in several categories, including foundation, bronzing powder, blush, and shimmer products.

Unfortunately, some of the products simply can't live up to their promises. This is mostly true of their skincare formulas, where the showcased ingredients are either present in itsy-bitsy amounts or the claims attributed to them are very exaggerated. Despite this, if you're in the mood for a fun experience and can manage to choose products wisely while enjoying the whimsy, Benefit deserves a look.
