Review Overview

This sunscreen is identical to Blue Lizard’s Baby Lizard Australian Sunscreen SPF 30+ Chemical Free Fragrance Free. As such, the same basic comments apply: This is a very good pure mineral sunscreen whose sole actives are titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. The chemical-free claim is without merit because all of the ingredients in this sunscreen, including the natural ones, are chemicals. However, this truly is fragrance-free and the formula is outstanding for use on sensitive skin of any age. This sunscreen has a creamy smooth texture and even application that leaves a faint white cast, which is typical of mineral-based sunscreens. However, you get excellent broad-spectrum protection with minimal risk of irritation.

Brand Overview

Blue Lizard At-a-Glance

Strengths: Inexpensive; every sunscreen offers reliable broad-spectrum protection; the sunscreens have great aesthetics, especially for normal to dry skin; some excellent sunscreens for sensitive and/or rosacea-affected skin.

Weaknesses: None of significance, though some of the sunscreen formulas would be even better if they contained an array of antioxidants.

Most well-known drugstores in America carry this small collection of sunscreens. The brand’s name indicates an association with Australia, which is odd because these sunscreens are manufactured by Crown Laboratories, a U.S.-based company. As it turns out, the Blue Lizard brand isn't even sold in Australia, which the company confirmed. We suspect the Australia connection has to do with the facts that (1) all of these sunscreens provide high levels of sun protection and (2) that Australians now take sunscreen seriously because of the country's high rates of skin cancer (Source: www.health.gov.au). In this case, Blue Lizard is on the right track!

According to Blue Lizard, “Regular and Sport provide 80 minutes of water-resistant protection based on the FDA testing method. This is the maximum allowed claim by the FDA. Blue Lizard Regular/Sport has also been found to meet the more rigorous Australian test method for water resistance at 240 minutes. Baby, Sensitive and Face do not claim water-resistant protection.”

In the United States, FDA regulation allows a "very water resistant" claim of no more than 80 minutes without needing to reapply (Source: www.fda.gov). Sunscreens labeled "water-resistant" must maintain sun protection for at least 40 minutes in water. Admittedly, it can be argued that Australia's method for determining a sunscreen's water resistance goes above and beyond what's required in the States. It does seem impressive that a sunscreen can last for 240 minutes (4 hours) in moving water, but legally and testing-wise, that's irrelevant for a sunscreen brand not sold in Australia. If anything, the United States' more conservative water-resistance timeframe is a stronger reminder to consumers that "water resistant" does not equal "waterproof," and so encourages consumers to be more diligent about reapplication. In summary, as long as you follow FDA guidelines for liberal application and reapplication after swimming or sweating for 80 minutes when the label says "very water resistant," you'll do fine with this brand.

The bottom line is that all of the Blue Lizard sunscreens are worth considering, regardless of where you live. They all provide impressive broad-spectrum sun protection and they're inexpensive. A few of them also are fragrance-free and contain only gentle mineral active ingredients, making them winners for those with sensitive skin. Although Blue Lizard isn’t the only sunscreen brand to consider, and the formulas aren't perfect (the texture and finish won't please everyone, especially those with oily skin), they are worth strong consideration for anyone spending time outdoors.

The Only Sunscreen I Trust On The Beach

I spend time on (U.S.) Gulf Coast beaches. This is the sunscreen I stock up on for the beach. Yes, it's white. Yes, it's greasy. And yes I look weird. But I come home from an entire week of spending entire days -- even at high noon -- on the beach with NO tan lines. NONE. I reapply it every hour and every time I get out of the water. I burned in the south wearing high SPF chemical sunscreens. Blue Lizard is first-class protection and I won't go to the beach without it.

Eccellent!

This is one of the best sunscreens available.High zinc oxide content which is an excellent UVA blocker.Goes on quite thick and white but soon vanishes into skin. Not greasy, I just find it moisturising.Only downside is maybe lack of antioxidants (not sure if it contains any)but I overcome this by using a Paula's serum underneath.Extremely good value . I do use Paula's sunscreens as well, and find them excellent, but I'm in the Uk and this is so much cheaper. No stinging around eyes with this.

Gave me a horrible rash

I was excited to try this sunscreen, but was sadly disappointed - and very itchy! - after using it. I consider my skin to be somewhat normal, definitely not sensitive, but 1 day after using this I broke out in a horrible rash. I applied to arms, neck, back of neck, and chest, and broke out in hives or some sort of weird rash (small red bumps). It's been a week and it is slowly going away. I would not recommend this product, not sure which ingredient caused such irritation.

did not work for my daughter's senstive skin

My 4-year-old daughter has eczema and sin senstivities. She seems to be allergic to everything. This irritated her skin and caused her to develop a rash of large red spots that took 4 days to subside. We now use Elta MD UV Pure for her with no irritation at all.

Very impressed!

After years of putting up with irritation from sunscreens (especially burning eyes), I decided to give this product a try based on Paula's recommendation - and I was suitably impressed! It's not nearly as heavy as other zinc oxide sunscreens I've tried in the past, even in warm weather. Within minutes I forget that I'm wearing it. Better still, I find it imparts almost no whiteness or shine to the skin. Definitely a product I will be using year round.
