Bobbi Brown's Perfectly Defined Long-Wear Brow Pencil is among one of the more expensive brow products we've reviewed, but the well-thought-out shades, convenient design + stay-put performance help justify the price—especially if other brow fillers have let you down! In particular, we were impressed by the flattering options for light blondes as well as grey-haired mavens—options not commonly found in other lines—as well as a gamut of other colors in mostly cool/ash tones. If you can get past the price, there's even more to love…

Beyond the color selection, Perfectly Defined Long-Wear Brow Pencil earns brownie points for its easy-to-use, retractable design, and the added bonus of the attached spoolie brush to help sculpt brows into place. The angled pencil works well, and quickly, to add natural-looking volume, though those who prefer an ultra-fine point won't find this precise enough (it starts out with a narrow point but whittles down to a softer edge as you use it).

As far as the texture goes, we wouldn't call it creamy, nor is it too stiff—just somewhere nicely in between that leaves brows soft instead of matted or waxy-looking. We also appreciate that the color goes builds gently rather than going on ultra-intense, making this a good option for someone who wants a natural look (or may be relatively inexperienced with applying brow color). We wouldn't quite call this fragrance-free formula waterproof enough for a long day in the pool, but it wears very well in normal conditions (through sweat, humidity, or a sprinkling of rain).

You certainly don't have to shell out this much moola to get a good brow product, but if you choose to splurge, Perfectly Defined Long-Wear Brow Pencil is a great option to do it on due to its impressive color range, natural finish and long-wear time!

Pros:
  • Easy-to-use, retractable pencil design, with an attached spoolie brush.
  • Well-thought-out shades, including options for grey or light blonde (a rare find).
  • Color builds gently for a more natural look.
  • Leave brows soft—not matted down.
  • Fragrance-free formula stays put through sweat and humidity.
Cons:
  • Those who prefer an ultra-fine point won't find this precise enough.

Brand Overview

Bobbi Brown At-A-Glance

Strengths: A good cleanser and eye makeup removers; some impressive foundations, with options for all skin types and preferences; very good blushes and eyeshadows (powder and cream); several top-notch mascaras; mostly excellent brushes.

Weaknesses: Multiple moisturizers in jar packaging, otherwise great products hindered with irritating fragrant oils or fragrance components.

It all began with lipsticks. In 1991, New York based makeup artist Bobbi Brown debuted a collection of ten lipsticks at Bergdorf Goodman, expecting to sell about one hundred units in a month. She sold more than that the first day. From there, it's been mostly success after success, as Brown launched her classic foundation stick, wrote her first book, Bobbi Brown Beauty The Ultimate Beauty Resource, and enjoyed continued attention as an in-demand makeup artist and beauty educator.

Today, Bobbi Brown's makeup that continues to excel with superior foundations, true matte blushes and eyeshadows, and with all of the other basics that are essential to anyone’s makeup wardrobe. It isn't the least bit surprising that this makeup collection continues to do so well, because for many it's one-stop shopping that combines classic makeup application techniques with enough fun-yet-functional products to keep customer's interest piqued season to season.

Turning to the skincare collection, there are a few excellent formulas, but unfortunately, many are packaged in a jar, which means their beneficial ingredients are rendered useless due to air exposure (and bacterial contamination from spatulas or fingers). In addition, some suffer from the inclusion of potent fragrant essential oils. Those that should be avoided are noted in their respective reviews. That aside, color is without a doubt Bobbi Brown's strong point—but you will find a few sleeper hits among the selection of skincare products.
