Bobbi Brown's Sequin Eye Shadow offers dazzling, rich color…depending on how you apply them, that is. Despite the fact that Brown's own site makes no mention of using these "baked" powder shadows wet, we found that method offered the best results as it intensifies the pigmentation and melds the metallic and glittery elements with skin for a gorgeous pop of dimensional color. These aren't necessarily the most practical go-to shadows for everyday wear, but when you want to kick things up a notch, Sequin Eye Shadow is a stunning option that lasts well into the night.
As eye-catching as each marbleized shade is in its packaging, when you swatch Sequin Eye Shadow on skin while it's dry, the color and pigment is a bit of a letdown. The powder formula goes on patchy instead of smooth, the pigmentation is faint, the glitter tends to flake and the color is prone to fading. That's where wet application makes all the difference, as it transforms this shadow into a rich, resilient, sparkling formula that resists creasing, fading or flaking!
Let's be very clear: The rating for this shadow is all about using it wet.
Alternatively, you can also layer Sequin Eye Shadow over a primer or gel eyeliner (a tip we got from a Bobbi Brown sales associate)—either method will help the sparkle adhere to skin and intensify the color, though we found the wet application was more impressive in terms overall performance. Whether you dampen a brush or pat Sequin Eye Shadow on wet with your fingertips, it's helpful to blur the edges out with a softer shadow to create a beautifully smooth, smoky-eye effect.
Of the four limited edition shades currently sold (some retailers only carry three shades), the hunter green "Comet" shade was a favorite among our staffers. Applying it wet brings out beautiful metallic and glittery elements that can make any eye color pop. You can also choose from hues of brown, navy blue, or a nearly-black purple shade. The level of sparkle varies from shade to shade, but each is done in a tasteful way.
As much as we love Bobbi Brown's Sequin Eye Shadow, it falls short of a five-star rating is due to the extra effort that the wet application takes, which not everyone will find easy (or convenient) to do and applying them dry simply isn't worth it. Otherwise, if you can master the application they're a beautiful option to consider!
- Sparkly finish adds a gorgeous pop of dimensional color.
- Offers dramatically rich pigmentation when applied wet (or layered over primer or gel eyeliner).
- Small but stunning shade range!
- Doesn't wear well when applied dry, by itself.
- Not everyone will find the wet or layered application convenient.
