Review Overview

This is a simply formulated but very gentle fragrance-free scrub. It is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive (assuming your sensitive skin can tolerate a gentle scrub). The sheer, gel-like formula rinses cleanly and doesn’t contain extraneous ingredients skin doesn’t need. Well done, Boots!

Plastic Microbeads in Cosmetics: This product contains polyethylene beads, which is an ingredient that has come under controversy in the recent past. In December of 2013, research published in the peer-reviewed journal, Marine Pollution Bulletin demonstrated that although polyurethane beads are non-toxic to humans, they are not filtered during sewage treatment and are accumulating in waterways. This means the beads have the potential to negatively affect marine wildlife who mistakenly consume them (Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2013).

Additional research published in December of 2013 demonstrated that polyurethane beads have the potential to absorb pollutants while in waterways. This research was conducted to establish the potential of absorption, however, and was not conducted using samples from actual waterways (Cell, 2013).

Beautypedia does not take an ideological stance in reviewing skincare products; rather, our reviews are based upon each product's potential harm or benefit to skin contingent upon what independent peer-reviewed scientific research has demonstrated. On issues like polyethylene beads in cosmetics or animal testing, we present the facts without judgment so that you may make your own decision whether or not this product is right for you.

Sensitive skin needs extra care especially when exfoliating. This hypoallergenic scrub is formulated with smoothing beads, mineral water and aloe vera. It gently polishes to reveal smoother, softer and revitalized skin. Fragrance-free. Lanolin-free. Soap-free. Dermatologically tested.

Boots At-A-Glance

Originating in England, Boots is named after founder John Boot, and it already had a worldwide presence before its 2004 pilot launch in the U.S. retail market through select Target and CVS drugstore. (Note: Boots is no longer available at CVS.) Its success in these stores led to a full-scale launch in spring 2007. Boots has been part of England's cosmetic history since 1839, and now over 1,500 freestanding Boots stores dot the British landscape. Of course, history has its place, but Boots, on the basis of their longevity, believes that it offers consumers the best products full of quality ingredients and also at a value price. Although it's true that Boots' price point is lower than many drugstore lines (at least those whose products make similar claims and have the same target audience), their line consists of some impressive options, but also contains some areas that left us wanting for more.

Boots’ sunscreens tend to be good, but be aware that some have SPF ratings below the benchmark SPF 30+. Although there are dozens of moisturizers available, you’ll find that many are indistinguishable from one another in terms of their formulas. While there are many great options for sensitive skin among the Boots’ line, there are much fewer choices for those seeking impressive anti-aging formulas due to the lack of beneficial ingredients.

Boots does feature antioxidants, peptides, and retinyl palmitate (a form of vitamin A not to be confused with pure retinol) in many of its products, but they tend to be present at less than impressive, or jar packaging compromises their benefits to skin due to light & air exposure.

You'll find some great options for cleansers, scrubs, sunless tanners, and treatments for dry, chapped lips, all at fair prices, and that's good news. (There are also quite a few impressive makeup products at surprisingly inexpensive prices.) Check our reviews for the products that shouldn’t be missed (as well as the less-than-impressive options).

For more information about Boots, call (866) 752-6687 or visit www.boots.com.

Note: Boots No7 and Botanics brands (only) are sold in Canada at Shoppers Drug Mart stores. In the U.S., most of the lines can be found at Target, Walgreens, and Ulta. As of August 2015, Boots has been acquired by Walgreens.

Strengths: Inexpensive; outstanding options for sensitive skin; good sunscreens; some impressive makeup products.

Weaknesses: Occasional use of jar packaging; some formulas with limited amounts of beneficial ingredients.

not so good

After bathing, I noticed a tiny red mark on my skin. Apparently I'd cut myself with the beads from this scrub. I never had that problem with natural scrub cleansers. Since I already bought a 2nd bottle on sale, I shall finish using it by mixing it with my regular cleanser, but won't re-purchase it again.

Good scrub, great deal!

There's a little too much gel in this product for the amount of beads there are, but it's nothing that really takes away from the effectiveness of the product. It's a really good, gentle scrub for my combination skin. I haven't used a scrub since Clean & Clear Morning Burst (I know better now!) & the beads in that scrub were about the size of a dot made with a regular size Sharpie. The beads in this formula are surprisingly much smaller, as in VERY tiny, but they do a great job at exfoliating!

Nice scrub for very sensitive skin

This is an extremely gentle scrub. If you have very sensitive skin, this might be a great choice for you. I have very sensitive skin. I have never found a facial scrub before that worked for me without leaving me blotchy and puffy for days afterward. I have gotten 2nd degree chemical burns from cosmetics and sunscreens--that is how sensitive my skin is. This scrub offered very mild exfoliation and did not leave me red or puffy. Plus, it is very affordable.

Not Effective.

While I like other products in the Boots Expert line. This one is on the fail list simply because there are not enough exfoliating beads in the scrub to do the job. The slippery gel consistency doesn't help.
