Review Overview

Beeswax Lip Balm Tin is the company’s most popular product, but it isn’t one we’d recommend because it contains irritating peppermint oil. Peppermint oil’s tingle is irritating to lips, so the potential for chapping to become worse is one that shouldn’t be overlooked (Source: Dermatitis, March-April 2010, pages 111–115).

Claims

This is our most popular product of all. It’s packed with protective ingredients such as ultra emollient lanolin and almond oil to help soothe cracked or chapped lips. You can use it on healthy lips for a little peppermint tingle.

Ingredients

Beeswax, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Oil, Lanolin, Tocopherol, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Canola Oil

Brand Overview

Strengths: Inexpensive.

Weaknesses: Many products have potent fragranced formulas; several formulas packaged in jars, which compromises their ingredients.

With humble beginnings in the town of Bangor, Maine, Burt's Bees is a brand focused on natural-themed, earth-friendly skincare. Unfortunately, in many cases, this also translates to less than beneficial formulas as not all of the natural ingredients used are helpful for skin.

Many of the plant extracts and oils used in these products, including orange oil, cinnamon oil, clove oil, lemon oil, eucalyptus oil, pine tar, alcohol, lime oil, and balsam peru, are problematic for skin and present a significant risk of irritation or a sensitizing reaction. Both the intriguing philosophy and inexpensive products are attractive, but it takes more than that to establish reliable products that are good for skin. It’s also important to consider the potential benefit (or potential harm) of the ingredients used.

There are some formulas to consider among the brand’s offerings, but some to be wary of—see our individual reviews on Burt’s Bees products for more details.

Great Lip Balm

I think the peppermint oil is what makes this so great, it's refreshing and cooling on my lips in the summer and soothes my dry chapped lips right away. I'm surprised you rated this as poor because I think it deserves much more praise.

BURT'S BEES BEESWAX LIP BALM TIN: THE BEST!

The peppermint oil this balm contains is a definite plus in my books because it really soothes the discomfort caused by chapped lips, even if it might sting a little when you first apply it. Furthermore the flavour is fairly neutral, the scent very pleasing and the consistency smooth, soft and not sticky at all. It really moisturizes and protects my lips. I've tried a lot of lip balms but this is what works best for me. NB: The beeswax balm in stick isn't as good as the tin potted one.
