Burt's Bees Lipstick is an affordable satin lipstick with a cushiony feel, and aside from some minor missteps (which we'll detail below), we recommend checking it out on your next drugstore trip.

This lipstick applies smoothly and did not feather or settle into lines despite having an emollient formula that was so rich it bordered on greasy. Available in an assortment of nudes, pinks, berries, and reds, each sets to a satin finish that feels comfortable. Thanks to a plethora of oils and waxes, the formula offers moisture that lasts all day long.

Burt's Bees Lipstick is housed in a square plastic tube with a cute honeycomb design on its sides. Unfortunately, the lipstick does not twist all the way down, so until you've used it several times you'll have to proceed with caution when removing the cap as to not damage the product inside.

Burt's Bees claims that this lipstick provides 8-hours of moisture, but does not specify that the color is long lasting and with good reason—it's not. It lasted for as long as most cream/satin lipsticks, about 4 hours. Like many other creamy, emollient lipsticks, this one transfers a bit when eating or drinking, but leaves a subtle stain behind. We aren't going to ding it for this, though, since the initial coverage is so opaque that only a single swipe is needed. If you only have to apply two coats total in a workday, we'd consider that a win!

Like most of their products, Burt's Bees Lipstick contains fragrance. In this case, it contains not only fragrance/aroma but also the fragrance chemical linalool. The scent is mostly fruity with a slight floral undertone and although it's strong initially, it dissipates quickly and we did not detect a taste. Still, those with extra-sensitive skin may want to take caution. The good news is that the brand omitted the irritating peppermint oil common in many of their other lip products!

Whether you're a lipstick lover or drugstore devotee, Burt's Bees Lipstick is a good choice for the attractive color, balm-like aesthetic and long-lasting moisture it provides. Aside from the fragrant ingredients and minor packaging gaffe, it's a good lipstick at a great price!

Pros:
  • Affordable.
  • Moisture lasts long after color fades.
  • Available in a wide range of pretty, pigmented shades.
  • Feels comfortable on the lips without feathering or settling into lines.
  • Contains skin beneficial antioxidants, an added bonus for lipstick.
Cons:
  • Contains fragrance and linalool, making it iffy for sensitive skin.
  • Does not twist all the way down, increasing the likelihood that the tip may end up damaged by the cap.

Brand Overview

Strengths: Inexpensive.

Weaknesses: Many products have potent fragranced formulas; several formulas packaged in jars, which compromises their ingredients.

With humble beginnings in the town of Bangor, Maine, Burt's Bees is a brand focused on natural-themed, earth-friendly skincare. Unfortunately, in many cases, this also translates to less than beneficial formulas as not all of the natural ingredients used are helpful for skin.

Many of the plant extracts and oils used in these products, including orange oil, cinnamon oil, clove oil, lemon oil, eucalyptus oil, pine tar, alcohol, lime oil, and balsam peru, are problematic for skin and present a significant risk of irritation or a sensitizing reaction. Both the intriguing philosophy and inexpensive products are attractive, but it takes more than that to establish reliable products that are good for skin. It’s also important to consider the potential benefit (or potential harm) of the ingredients used.

There are some formulas to consider among the brand’s offerings, but some to be wary of—see our individual reviews on Burt’s Bees products for more details.
