Review Overview

Peach & Willowbark Deep Pore Scrub contains an appreciable amount of sodium borate. Also known as borax, this ingredient has a drying effect on skin due to its alkaline pH. It is fine in small amounts, but that’s not the case here, making this a scrub to avoid.

Claims

Gently exfoliate with finely ground Peach Stone while Willow Bark clears pores and antiseptic Golden Seal controls outbreaks. Stimulating Hawaiian Ginger and Seaweed Extracts improve skin elasticity and replenish essential minerals, leaving your face deeply clean and naturally nourished.

Ingredients

Water, Grapeseed Oil, Stearic Acid (Vegetable Fat), Vegetable Glycerin, Peach Stone, Coconut Oil, Sodium Borate (Natural Borax), Fragrance, Willowbark Extract, Glucose, Chamomile Extract, Goldenseal Extract, Hawaiian Ginger Extract, Bladderwrack Extract, Xanthan Gum (Natural Thickener), Sucrose Stearate (Sugar Emulsifier), Glucose Oxidase & Lactoperoxidase

Brand Overview

Strengths: Inexpensive.

Weaknesses: Many products have potent fragranced formulas; several formulas packaged in jars, which compromises their ingredients.

With humble beginnings in the town of Bangor, Maine, Burt's Bees is a brand focused on natural-themed, earth-friendly skincare. Unfortunately, in many cases, this also translates to less than beneficial formulas as not all of the natural ingredients used are helpful for skin.

Many of the plant extracts and oils used in these products, including orange oil, cinnamon oil, clove oil, lemon oil, eucalyptus oil, pine tar, alcohol, lime oil, and balsam peru, are problematic for skin and present a significant risk of irritation or a sensitizing reaction. Both the intriguing philosophy and inexpensive products are attractive, but it takes more than that to establish reliable products that are good for skin. It’s also important to consider the potential benefit (or potential harm) of the ingredients used.

There are some formulas to consider among the brand’s offerings, but some to be wary of—see our individual reviews on Burt’s Bees products for more details.

Awful

This scrub is a harsh physical exfoliant that I didn't realize was terrible for my acne, until I started educating myself. That aside, the absolute worst part of this product: I cut the tube open to try to get the last remaining product and was disgusted to find all colors and sizes of mold growing inside the tube!
