Review Overview

This lightweight lotion has an odor reminiscent of chlorine and citronella, so we’re not off to a good start if your olfactory sense is especially acute. It’s also a letdown that the main ingredient is sunflower oil, which someone with blemish-prone skin does not need—yet the company claims this product controls oil! That’s like telling an obese person they’ll slim down by consuming more calories and not exercising! The theory that oily skin is producing too much oil because it needs more has no basis in fact. Skin makes oil because of androgens (male hormones).

Adding to the misinformation is the fact that this contains 1% salicylic acid as its active ingredient, a decidedly unnatural ingredient (so much for a natural solution for acne), but the pH of 5 prevents it from exfoliating skin or from affecting the bacteria that cause acne. Last, this has an unappealing waxy, tacky finish on skin that is far from representative of how today’s best moisturizers (those with and without salicylic acid) feel.

This natural light weight lotion is clinically proven to help control oil and protect against blemishes without irritating skin. Formulated with Lemongrass, Witch Hazel, Goldenseal and Hops to help soothe and calm irritation, resulting in clear, smoothing, and healthy-looking skin, naturally.

Brand Overview

Strengths: Inexpensive.

Weaknesses: Many products have potent fragranced formulas; several formulas packaged in jars, which compromises their ingredients.

With humble beginnings in the town of Bangor, Maine, Burt's Bees is a brand focused on natural-themed, earth-friendly skincare. Unfortunately, in many cases, this also translates to less than beneficial formulas as not all of the natural ingredients used are helpful for skin.

Many of the plant extracts and oils used in these products, including orange oil, cinnamon oil, clove oil, lemon oil, eucalyptus oil, pine tar, alcohol, lime oil, and balsam peru, are problematic for skin and present a significant risk of irritation or a sensitizing reaction. Both the intriguing philosophy and inexpensive products are attractive, but it takes more than that to establish reliable products that are good for skin. It’s also important to consider the potential benefit (or potential harm) of the ingredients used.

There are some formulas to consider among the brand’s offerings, but some to be wary of—see our individual reviews on Burt’s Bees products for more details.
