If you're looking for a drugstore moisturizer with SPF that delivers a lot more than just sun protection, CeraVe's AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 30 is one to check out. This lotion—which previously got a good rating from us—now hits top-tier status thanks to an improved sun protection formula that puts it over the top.

Like many of CeraVe's products, AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 30 comes in an opaque plastic bottle with a convenient pump dispenser. The product has a lightweight lotion texture that's best for normal to slightly dry or slightly oily skin. It feels elegant rather than too "beach sunscreen-like" and wears well under makeup. This fragrance-free daytime moisturizer also contains an impressive mix of skin-identical ingredients (ceramides and hyaluronic acid), alongside the cell-communicating ingredient niacinamide.

So why do we rate this updated formula higher than the previous version (which also included the additional skin-beneficial ingredients)? The prior version did have SPF, but it did not protect skin from a broad range of both UVA and UVB rays. CeraVe's reformulation includes a higher amount of the mineral sunscreen active zinc oxide, which protects across the full UVA range, making this truly broad spectrum. That's great news, because the latest formula can shield skin not only from the rays that cause sunburn, but also those that contribute to aging and skin cancer.

Because of its already-good formula and the addition of better SPF protection, CeraVe AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 30 easily earns our highest rating, and our enthusiastic recommendation!

Pros:
  • Lightweight lotion texture wears well under makeup.
  • Contains an impressive mix of skin-identical ingredients plus cell-communicating niacinamide.
  • Provides broad-spectrum sun protection.
  • Fragrance-free.
  • Inexpensive and generously sized.
Cons:
  • None.

CeraVe At-A-Glance

This expanding collection of skincare products keeps things gentle and effective with fragrance-free formulas, many of which are more state-of-the-art than any other product in its price range or pricier versions at the drugstore. In short, this line is a real find!

CeraVe uses a delivery system the company refers to as Multivesicular Emulsion Technology, which releases key ingredients such as ceramides and hyaluronic acid over a period of several hours. Although this technology is undoubtedly helpful, such time-delayed delivery systems aren't unique to CeraVe, and the fact remains that most of the ingredients they use are very helpful on their own, no matter what delivery system you use.

The important point is that ongoing, consistent use of this kind of moisturizer designed to repair the skin's barrier function will result in smoother, softer, healthier skin.

It is for these reasons that most CeraVe products are definitely worth considering, especially at this price. You'll find a options for moisturizing, cleansing, broad spectrum sun protection, and baby care.
