CeraVe has done it again! With only one caveat that we explain below, their Healing Ointment treatment is a wonderful, gentle, fragrance-free formula for dry, cracked, and chafed skin—and the price is excellent for what you get.
The formula contains almost 47% petrolatum (Vaseline), an ingredient that's categorized as a skin protectant due to its emollient, occlusive qualities. (Don't take occlusive to mean skin can't breathe; skin doesn't really breathe and in this case, the occlusion can actually help skin heal because it protects it from drying air).
Also along for the ride are tried-and-true emollients like mineral oil, silicone (dimethicone), and waxes. All of these help create this ointment's long-lasting moisturizing effect and ability to help dry, cracked skin begin to heal.
Had CeraVe stopped with the aforementioned list of emollients we wouldn't have rated this product as highly. So, it's a good thing they also added proven skin-repairing ingredients like ceramides, cholesterol, and hyaluronic acid—all ingredients that make up what's known as the intercellular matrix, the mortar that holds healthy skin cells together so they look smooth and feel soft.
The only drawback is that despite CeraVe's claim that Healing Ointment has a "non-greasy feel,", this does feel greasy. You can't combine so many emollient ingredients in a waterless formula and not have at least a slight greasy feel (even if you only apply a thin layer) but that's the tradeoff for these types of products. On the upside, Healing Ointment does not feel as heavy or greasy as pure Vaseline, or even longstanding favorite, Aqauaphor Healing Ointment. In fact, CeraVe's contribution is esthetically superior when compared to those two ointments.
Healing Ointment from CeraVe deserves high praise for its innovative emollient-packed, fragrance-free formula that also treats compromised skin to much-needed repairing ingredients. It's easy to spread and although it absolutely can feel greasy, it also does an excellent job of helping very dry, cracked skin (such as on hands, lips, elbows, and heels) look and feel noticeably better. This isn't the type of product you'd slather on your face every night, but it's ideal for stubborn dry spots anywhere on the body.
Note: CeraVe offers this product in no fewer than four sizes: an opaque 0.35-ounce tube, a 3- and 5-ounce tube, and a 12-ounce jar. The pricing indicated in this review is for the 3-ounce tube.
