Review Overview

CeraVe's Intensive Stretch Marks Cream is loaded with skin-repairing and cell-communicating ingredients, along with a mix of antioxidants and emollients that makes good on its promise to repair and restore the skin's barrier. You'll find a nice mix of plant butters (cocoa, shea and mango), along with ceramides, hyaluronic acid, argan oil, and a peptide; this is a very good moisturizer for use anywhere on the body.

Bonus: It's fragrance free and packaged in a tube to protect the light and air-sensitive ingredients. But for stretch marks? Well, don't get your hopes up. Intensive Stretch Marks Cream earned a Beautypedia BEST for its impressive ingredient deck, not for its ability to make good on its claims to improve the appearance of stretch marks.

When skin develops a "stretch mark", this is literally the stretching and breaking of elastic bands deep beneath the surface layers of skin—once this occurs, nothing applied topically will repair them. For more information about this topic, check our article, Stretch Marks: What Works (and What Doesn't). We'll warn you now, there's some hope, but the scientific and medical conclusions are a little depressing for those of us afflicted with vexing stretch marks.

That aside, this is absolutely a wonderful option to consider for a dry-skin moisturizer without sunscreen, above or below the neck. If you do use Intensive Stretch Marks Cream on your face or eye area, it's likely a better choice for your evening routine as its richer texture may not be ideal under your sunscreen and makeup.

Pros:
  • Includes an impressive mix of anti-aging ingredients.
  • Substantial cream contains ingredients proven to repair and strengthen skin's barrier.
  • Fragrance free and packaged to protect its light and air-sensitive ingredients.
  • Affordable given it's state of the art formula for dry, sensitive skin.
Cons:
  • Cannot repair or improve the appearance of stretch marks any better than other moisturizers, because in truth there's not much that can be done to improve stretch marks.

Brand Overview

CeraVe At-A-Glance

Strengths: Affordable, gentle, and fragrance-free; some excellent moisturizers and facial cleansers; a well-formulated eye cream; products provide broad-spectrum sun protection; remarkably gentle baby care; good (but small) assortment of anti-aging products.

Weaknesses: SPF products would do better with the inclusion of antioxidants and more elegant textures; the Renewing SA products aren't as adept at treating keratosis pilaris as they could be.

This small-ish (but expanding( collection of skin-care products keeps things gentle and effective with fragrance-free formulas, many of which are more state-of-the-art than any other product in its price range or pricier versions at the drugstore. In short, this line is a real find!

CeraVe uses a delivery system the company refers to as Multivesicular Emulsion Technology, which releases key ingredients such as ceramides and hyaluronic acid over a period of several hours. Although this technology is undoubtedly helpful, such time-delayed delivery systems aren't unique to CeraVe, and the fact remains that most of the ingredients they use are very helpful on their own, no matter what delivery system you use.

The important point is that ongoing, consistent use of this kind of moisturizer designed to repair the skin's barrier function will result in smoother, softer, healthier skin. An interesting element for this product is the inclusion of phytosphingosine. It is an ingredient that research shows is effective in regulating damaged or diseased epithelial cells. It seems this ingredient can be a cell-communicating ingredient, albeit one that is best for compromised skin. However, given CeraVe is positioned for those struggling with psoriasis, eczema, or rosacea, that's a great addition. (Source: Journal of Investigative Dermatology, October 2003, pages 1135–1137).

It is for these reasons that all the CeraVe products are definitely worth considering, especially at this price. You'll find a options for moisturizing, cleansing, baby care, broad spectrum sun protection (though many of the SPF products don't feel or look so great on skin), and baby care.

Beautypedia Team Response

Hi there!  Here is a link to the store locator on CeraVe's website:  http://www.cerave.com/find-a-store.  Just enter your zip code and it should be able to tell you where there is a store near you that carries their products.  Aside from that, it looks like you can buy them online at Walgreens & Ulta Beauty.  I hope that helps!

salicylic acid

Is there enough salicylic acid/ is the ph within the proper range to get any exfoliation benefit?

Beautypedia Team Response

Hi there!  Since CeraVe does not list the salicylic acid as an active ingredient and does not claim or market any exfolating benefits in this product, we would not think it has any.  Its pH is likely out of the range for this to occur.

A fabulous product for the face!

I too, would not have known about this cream were it not for the Paula's Choice review. Yes, it's intended for the body, but I've been using it for two + months as my night cream, and in the morning my dry, sensitive, rosacea-prone skin is smooth, cool and soothed. It's very rich, yet it absorbs quickly, even when layered over my PC serum. In short, this is the night cream I've been dreaming of - and for an amazing price. I've already purchased two replacement tubes.

Another great recommendation

Thank you Beautypedia for recommending another great product that wouldn't have been on my radar otherwise. It's a little hard to find. I finally found it and ordered it from the Ulta website. It's fragrance-free and moisturizing but not too greasy. I also intend to use this around the eyes. Great price for a great product. I'm sure I'll repurchase.
