Renewing SA Cleanser, with the “SA” standing for salicylic acid, tries to differentiate itself from CeraVe’s original Foaming Facial Cleanser, but is nearly identical save for, you guessed it, salicylic acid! Unfortunately, this beta hydroxy acid (BHA) exfoliating ingredient is of little use in a cleanser. That’s because of its brief contact with skin and, in the case of this product, because the pH is slightly outside the ideal range salicylic acid needs to be effective.

Although the SA addition won’t do much for skin, this is still a very good, gentle, fragrance-free cleanser for normal to oily skin, including skin’s that’s oily yet sensitive. It is not ideal for combination skin with dry areas, because the cleansing agents it contains can clean more than what dry areas or dry skin needs to not feel stripped.

The formula produces a slight lather, removes makeup easily, and rinses without a hint of residue. The inclusion of skin-identical ingredients is a nice touch, although these state-of-the-art ingredients are best when included in products meant to be left on the skin. Like the Foaming Facial Cleanser from CeraVe, Renewing SA Cleanser is housed in an opaque bottle outfitted with a handy pump to dispense the cleanser.

Pros:

  • Gentle, water-soluble formula rinses cleanly.
  • Removes most types of makeup.
  • Fragrance-free.

Cons:

  • The salicylic acid cannot function as an exfoliant due to the cleanser’s pH and its brief contact with skin.

CeraVe At-A-Glance

This expanding collection of skincare products keeps things gentle and effective with fragrance-free formulas, many of which are more state-of-the-art than any other product in its price range or pricier versions at the drugstore. In short, this line is a real find!

CeraVe uses a delivery system the company refers to as Multivesicular Emulsion Technology, which releases key ingredients such as ceramides and hyaluronic acid over a period of several hours. Although this technology is undoubtedly helpful, such time-delayed delivery systems aren't unique to CeraVe, and the fact remains that most of the ingredients they use are very helpful on their own, no matter what delivery system you use.

The important point is that ongoing, consistent use of this kind of moisturizer designed to repair the skin's barrier function will result in smoother, softer, healthier skin.

It is for these reasons that most CeraVe products are definitely worth considering, especially at this price. You'll find a options for moisturizing, cleansing, broad spectrum sun protection, and baby care.
