The Charlotte Tilbury brand claims its Eyes to Mesmerise Long-Lasting Easy Cream Eyeshadow is the "ultimate foolproof product" and that it's part of a "no-mirror makeup" routine. Unfortunately, it does have some very apparent wear and performance issues, which is why it earned an average, two-star rating.

Eyes to Mesmerise comes, like many cream shadows, in a small glass pot with a screw-top lid. The texture is luxurious and almost mousse-like, making this incredibly easy to apply and blend either with fingers or a blending brush. This shadow is very pigmented, so a little goes a long way, meaning that even though the pot is small it should last a long time. Charlotte Tilbury offers a small range of mostly workable neutral shades (like copper, brown, and champagne) for Eyes to Mesmerise, though there is one bright teal shade in the lineup. The finish is attractive and definitely has shimmer, though it isn't sparkly.

The problems with this shadow, however, start shortly after application. Within the first half-hour you'll notice creasing, regardless of what you apply under it. We tried this on just on its own, over foundation, and over a shadow primer and the result was the same: Creasing before we hit the one-hour mark. The creasing can definitely be blended out, though within a couple of hours it starts to crease again, meaning this isn't "no-mirror" makeup (you'll have to keep checking your lids)!

The other issue is that while Charlotte Tilbury says this formula is long-lasting, it starts to fade about four hours into its wear time. By the six-hour mark we noticed considerable fading—and in most cases when a shadow lives up to a "long-lasting" claim, it generally means its color doesn't fade for about eight hours (a typical work day).

While Eyes to Mesmerise definitely has some things to like about it (like its lux texture and pretty colors), its issues with performance and wear mean it's not a shadow that we can recommend over the many better alternatives available (in all price ranges). To see a list of those we do recommend (including cream formulas), check out our list of Best Eyeshadows.

Pros:
  • Mousse-like texture is easy to apply and blend.
  • Very pigmented formula.
  • Mostly neutral shades.
  • Attractive shimmer finish.
Cons:
  • Begins to crease soon after application.
  • Fades about four hours into its wear time (which is about 6 hours).

Brand Overview

Charlotte Tilbury At-A-Glance

Charlotte Tilbury’s journey into creating her own makeup line began back in her teen years when she discovered the transformative power of makeup. Fast-forward several years and celebrity clients later, Tilbury made a name for herself as a makeup artist who epitomized the glamorous beauty of the supermodel era in the 90’s. Along the way, she became a consultant for beauty brands, and eventually decided to create her own line of makeup and select skincare products in 2013.

One of the strong suits of Charlotte Tilbury’s makeup is her take on color. The woman knows her way around flattering a complexion and making features pop, and you can see that in her shade range. That doesn’t mean you won’t find some misses along the way, but as a whole, the line offers an impressive selection of color.

Tilbury’s skincare, on the other hand, doesn’t fare quite as well. Between the use of jar packaging and some highly fragranced formulas, skin is left compromised (see individual reviews for details).

In no small way Tilbury’s years of painting beautiful faces has helped shape what her makeup line is today. If you don’t mind the $$$ factor, it’s worth taking a look at the standouts which earn our highest rating.

Strengths: Excellent color selection; natural-looking foundation and concealer.

Weaknesses: The iconic Magic Cream comes in a jar; some highly fragranced formulas.
