One of makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury's biggest claims to fame is the eye-enhancing looks she creates for celebrities, from models to movie stars. The Classic Eyeliner Powder Pencil is supposed to help you achieve those same results at home. While it definitely has its appeal, there are enough drawbacks that it's ultimately a good, but not great, product—especially for its price tag (we'll get to that in just a minute!).
True to its name, The Classic Eyeliner Powder Pencil is a straightforward, manually-sharpened pencil that, at the time of this review, comes in just two colors: A deep chocolate brown and a lighter reddish-brown. So what sets this apart from the scores of other pencil liners on the market?
The very best thing about this product is that it's incredibly smooth. Pencil liners can often have a hard texture that drags across lids, but The Classic Eyeliner Powder Pencil glides along the lash line. You get rich color with no tugging whatsoever, and the pencil is versatile enough that you can either lightly line eyes for a subtle daytime look or build up the color for more dramatic evening wear. If you like the smoky eyes look, this is perfect!
Unfortunately, the emollient texture that makes this liner so easy to work with is also its chief problem. We found that it begins to fade a bit after about five hours of wear—and it smudges noticeably by the end of its wear time (about a standard workday). It also smudged under our eyes when we lined our lower lashline, too! What's more, when we lined just our lids, the color transferred to our bottom lashes.
What a shame, because without the fading and smudging, The Classic Eyeliner Powder Pencil is one of the better pencil liners we've tried. Because of the smudging issues, though, it winds up falling just short of our highest rating. If you're interested in options that do, see our list of Best Eyeliners.
