Review Overview

This oil-absorbing clay mask is still well-suited for those struggling with acne (and/or oily skin). It contains soothing plant extracts and is also fragrance-free, which lands it on the short list of best masks for those with oily, breakout-prone complexions. Although the package lists 1% salicylic acid as its active ingredient clays don't have an acidic pH, so the salicylic acid (BHA) won’t function as an exfoliant.

Soothing natural clay-based mask helps heal blemishes, prevent breakouts and keep skin shine-free. Medicated formula goes deep to clean and unclog pores, rid skin of excess oil. In just 5 minutes, skin looks clearer, smoother, and less blemish-troubled. Gentle, non-drying formula won’t irritate skin.

Active: Salicylic Acid (1%), Other: Water, Kaolin, Butylene Glycol, Magnesium Aluminum Silicate, Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate, Glyceryl Stearate, PEG-100 Stearate, Gentian Root Extract, Laminaria Saccharina Extract, Sucrose, Matricaria, Algae Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Powder, Acetyl Glucosamine, Inulin, 1,2-Hexanediol, Capryl Glycol, Xanthan Gum, Disodium EDTA, Chlorphenesin, Phenoxyethanol, Titanium Dioxide

Brand Overview

Clinique At-A-Glance

Strengths: A few excellent moisturizers and serums; excellent sunscreens; very good cleansers and eye makeup removers; unique mattifying products; impressive selection of foundations, good concealers; some remarkable mascaras; much-improved eyeshadows, lip colors and blush formulas.

Weaknesses: Bar soaps (which can clog pores and dull skin); alcohol-based toners; unfortunate choice of jar packaging for antioxidant-loaded moisturizers.

Estee Lauder-owned Clinique launched the concept of cosmetics being "allergy-tested," "hypoallergenic," "100% fragrance-free," and "dermatologist tested." Of those marketing claims, the only one with significance is "100% fragrance-free," which, for the most part, Clinique maintains (although it does add some fragrant extracts to a few products). Unfortunately, terms like “hypoallergenic” and “dermatologist tested” aren’t regulated by the FDA and can mean anything—thus, you still need to rely on the ingredient list to tell you whether their product contains any ingredients with the potential to irritate skin.

That inconvenient fact aside, Clinique is leading the way with cutting-edge, state-of-the-art moisturizers and serums, plus some formidable makeup and more than a few excellent sunscreens. While Clinique has some products that we see as missteps for reasons discussed in their reviews, more than ever, what they offer is quite good (just have realistic expectations, as some of their claims go beyond what their products are capable of).

Turning to makeup, Clinique continues to offer a vast palette of colors and textures, especially with their enormous selection of foundations—many of which feature effective sunscreens. Without a doubt, the numerous formulas offer something for every skin type and almost every skin color—though the blushes, eye makeup and lip colors are frequently not pigmented enough for deeper skin tones.

The bottom line is that, despite a few shortcomings, Clinique is one of the most comprehensive (and comparably affordable) department-store makeup lines, and it is completely understandable why they enjoy such broad appeal.

Note: Clinique is categorized as one that tests on animals because their products are sold in China. Although Clinique does not conduct animal testing for their products sold elsewhere, the Chinese government requires imported cosmetics be tested on animals, so foreign companies retailing there must comply. This requirement is why some brand’s state that they don’t test on animals “unless required by law”. Animal rights organizations consider cosmetic companies retailed in China to be brands that test on animals, and so does the Beautypedia Team.

Mixed feelings.

It makes a pretty good job clearing out the oil, but since I have acne prone, combination skin it works on my T zone but dries out the rest of my skin. So good but only for my T-zone.

Doesn't like very much. .

I been used this mask before, but on my skin i have a bad experience (rednesses imitations). I never trust on this brand and definitely there are better masks to oily skin!

Smooth Mask

I bought this two weeks ago after reading reviews here and I am very pleased. I have been dealing with acne my entire adult life. It is difficult to find products that don't cause breakouts. Not only does this help with blemishes but my skin is so soft and smooth after using it. Definite keeper.

The only non-PC product I use

This is the ONLY non-Paula's-Choice product I use on my oily, acne-prone face (and I use about 10-12 altogether). This mask proved much more effective for me than PC's clay mask - with this, I immediately see smoother skin and less noticeable blackheads. While pricey, it lasts forever - I'm still on my first tube, and I'm coming on a year of twice-weekly use. Skin might feel tight during the 5min its on, but once rinsed and followed with regular routine (incl moisturizer), it feels beautiful!
