Chubby Stick Shadow Tint for Eyes

Review Overview

This twist-up eyeshadow stick is far less impressive than it's touted to be. Although the diverse shade range has several attractive colors suitable for day or nighttime wear, there are some drawbacks.

The creamy consistency of this eyeshadow stick makes it easy to blend, yet it takes longer to dry down than it should, which can cause immediate creasing. Cream eyeshadows are traditionally long-wearing, but this option by Clinique begins to crease and fade before the day is over—a fact that's made quite obvious thanks to the shiny satin finish of each shade.

  • Diverse shade range, with options for day and nighttime use.
  • Applies and blends easily.
  • Takes too long to dry down.
  • Creases and fades before the day is over.
Brand Overview

Clinique At-A-Glance

Strengths: A few excellent moisturizers and serums; excellent sunscreens; very good cleansers and eye makeup removers; unique mattifying products; impressive selection of foundations, good concealers; some remarkable mascaras; much-improved eyeshadows, lip colors and blush formulas.

Weaknesses: Bar soaps (which can clog pores and dull skin); alcohol-based toners; unfortunate choice of jar packaging for antioxidant-loaded moisturizers.

Estee Lauder-owned Clinique launched the concept of cosmetics being "allergy-tested," "hypoallergenic," "100% fragrance-free," and "dermatologist tested." Of those marketing claims, the only one with significance is "100% fragrance-free," which, for the most part, Clinique maintains (although it does add some fragrant extracts to a few products). Unfortunately, terms like “hypoallergenic” and “dermatologist tested” aren’t regulated by the FDA and can mean anything—thus, you still need to rely on the ingredient list to tell you whether their product contains any ingredients with the potential to irritate skin.

That inconvenient fact aside, Clinique is leading the way with cutting-edge, state-of-the-art moisturizers and serums, plus some formidable makeup and more than a few excellent sunscreens. While Clinique has some products that we see as missteps for reasons discussed in their reviews, more than ever, what they offer is quite good (just have realistic expectations, as some of their claims go beyond what their products are capable of).

Turning to makeup, Clinique continues to offer a vast palette of colors and textures, especially with their enormous selection of foundations—many of which feature effective sunscreens. Without a doubt, the numerous formulas offer something for every skin type and almost every skin color—though the blushes, eye makeup and lip colors are frequently not pigmented enough for deeper skin tones.

The bottom line is that, despite a few shortcomings, Clinique is one of the most comprehensive (and comparably affordable) department-store makeup lines, and it is completely understandable why they enjoy such broad appeal.

Note: Clinique is categorized as one that tests on animals because their products are sold in China. Although Clinique does not conduct animal testing for their products sold elsewhere, the Chinese government requires imported cosmetics be tested on animals, so foreign companies retailing there must comply. This requirement is why some brand’s state that they don’t test on animals “unless required by law”. Animal rights organizations consider cosmetic companies retailed in China to be brands that test on animals, and so does the Beautypedia Team.

great shadow

This eyeshadow is very quick and easy to apply, it blends well with a finger. It has a dryer texture and finish then traditional cream eyeshadows that come in a jar. It has just the right amount of shimmer for me, unlike many cream shadows that tend to be metallic. It also lasts all day with no creasing.

Chubby Stick for Eyes

My sister in law raved about this product so I thought I would try this. I was very disappointed in quality and performance of this product. The color tint barely shows on my eyelids and it felt very heavy on them making them appear droopy. I do not recommend this product at all.

I use as a eyeshadow base

I don't find that there is enough pigment in the stick to use as a standalone eyeshadow, but I layer it under my normal beige shadow and it gives incredible staying power to average eyeshadow. I love it for that reason

I would have rated these the "BEST!"

Chubby Sticks for Eyes stay put all day and are a breeze to use! They layer beautifully and while they do have a little sparkle, it's not too much. I am 60 and love the ease and look of these on my eyes. I use a beige shade all over my eye and a fudge to contour. You can't get much better than this. You do not need an eyeshadow base as these work well on their own and stay on all day long. Easy to remove at night as well.

Better than average shadow stick

I've used Clinique shadows for years and bought three colors in this new product. I'm very satisfied with the shadow, especially due to the stick formulation which makes traveling easier (not necessary to pack in the TSA-compliant ziplock). The formulation has some sparkle to it, fine for me since I apply a powder shadow over it. I haven't noticed that this shadow "doesn't dry down," as mentioned in the PC review.
