Review Overview

Even though Clinique reformulated their Clarifying Lotion products they didn't improve the formulas! Clarifying Lotion 2 is an alcohol-based BHA exfoliant that still contains witch hazel and menthol. The Clinique salespeople may claim that the alcohol is “cosmetics-grade,” which sounds nice but doesn’t make this product any less irritating. The alcohol this contains will de-grease skin, but is also capable of triggering oil production at the base of your pores, making oily or combination skin worse.

Claims

The difference-maker. Gentle exfoliating lotion developed by Clinique’s dermatologists for skins dry in the cheeks, comfortable to oily in the T-zone. De-flakes skin’s surface to smooth, reveal clearer skin.

Ingredients

Water, Alcohol Denat., Glycerin, Salicylic Acid, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel), Menthol, Trehalose, Sodium Hyaluronate, Butylene Glycol, Citric Acid, Sodium Hydroxide, Disodium EDTA, BHT, Phenoxyethanol, Benzophenone-4, Red 6, Red 33, Violet 2

Brand Overview

Clinique At-A-Glance

Strengths: A few excellent moisturizers and serums; excellent sunscreens; very good cleansers and eye makeup removers; unique mattifying products; impressive selection of foundations, good concealers; some remarkable mascaras; much-improved eyeshadows, lip colors and blush formulas.

Weaknesses: Bar soaps (which can clog pores and dull skin); alcohol-based toners; unfortunate choice of jar packaging for antioxidant-loaded moisturizers.

Estee Lauder-owned Clinique launched the concept of cosmetics being "allergy-tested," "hypoallergenic," "100% fragrance-free," and "dermatologist tested." Of those marketing claims, the only one with significance is "100% fragrance-free," which, for the most part, Clinique maintains (although it does add some fragrant extracts to a few products). Unfortunately, terms like “hypoallergenic” and “dermatologist tested” aren’t regulated by the FDA and can mean anything—thus, you still need to rely on the ingredient list to tell you whether their product contains any ingredients with the potential to irritate skin.

That inconvenient fact aside, Clinique is leading the way with cutting-edge, state-of-the-art moisturizers and serums, plus some formidable makeup and more than a few excellent sunscreens. While Clinique has some products that we see as missteps for reasons discussed in their reviews, more than ever, what they offer is quite good (just have realistic expectations, as some of their claims go beyond what their products are capable of).

Turning to makeup, Clinique continues to offer a vast palette of colors and textures, especially with their enormous selection of foundations—many of which feature effective sunscreens. Without a doubt, the numerous formulas offer something for every skin type and almost every skin color—though the blushes, eye makeup and lip colors are frequently not pigmented enough for deeper skin tones.

The bottom line is that, despite a few shortcomings, Clinique is one of the most comprehensive (and comparably affordable) department-store makeup lines, and it is completely understandable why they enjoy such broad appeal.

Note: Clinique is categorized as one that tests on animals because their products are sold in China. Although Clinique does not conduct animal testing for their products sold elsewhere, the Chinese government requires imported cosmetics be tested on animals, so foreign companies retailing there must comply. This requirement is why some brand’s state that they don’t test on animals “unless required by law”. Animal rights organizations consider cosmetic companies retailed in China to be brands that test on animals, and so does the Beautypedia Team.

Most horrible product

Thank goodness I only got a sample of this with a purchase (it was supposed to work with another product but no, it doesn't)! The formula has been changed since Paula's review - at least in my 'made in UK' version, but only for the worse! The salicylic acid is indeed gone (no acetyl glucosamine, either), so basically what remains is only all the irritants. I can't fathom how anyone can claim it does their skin any good, especially if yours is sensitive. All it does is stings and burns.

Beautypedia Team Response

Thanks for your feedback!  We just chatted with Clinique who confirmed that the version in the U.S. does indeed have salicylic acid in it.  It's too bad they removed the beneficial ingredient in your version though!  :(

Too harsh for sensitive skin

It's way too harsh for my sensitive skin. It stings really badly and that's not a good thing.

I love this

I love my clarifying lotion despite all the bad press it gets! However the ingredient list here needs updating... The exfoliator is no longer salicylic acid... Its acetyl glucosamine xx

I RATE THIS THE "BEST"

I started us inning this when I was 19 and now am 60. My skin looks fantastic and if I venture away from my Clairifying Lotion 2, my skin looks dull again. I cannot go without it. I have used Clinique products for over 40 years now and counting. During those forty years I have tried many other department and drugstore brands. I always come back to Clinique. If you only use one thing, I would suggest their Clairfying Lotion. I have super sensitive skin and have NEVER had any problems!!!!!

I like it!

I really love Paula's reviews, generally. There's no doubt that she knows her chemistry. However, I sometimes find that she's off the mark; notably, she seems to favour products that work well with extremely sensitive skin. That's just fine! And it's probably a good rule of thumb. But for someone who has non sensitive skin, the BHA is great, the menthol feels good and the alcohol does no harm (as far as I can see.) I have no probs with this product at all.

Great product

For the large bottle that i purchased, it was around 13 GBP which was good money considering there was a lot of product. I notice amazing results when using this product and my skin is a lot clearer. When i stop using this product i can see my skin gradually get worse!!
