Review Overview

This fragrance-free moisturizer, despite the "rich" claims, doesn't contain a brilliant assortment of ingredients for seriously dry, dehydrated skin. Its texture and overall formula are best for normal to slightly dry skin or for oily skin struggling with dry patches.

As is typical for Clinique, this moisturizer contains several antioxidants, repairing ingredients, and cell-communicating ingredients. Skin needs all of these to repair itself and act younger.

The problem? Many of those ingredients are not stable upon repeated exposure to light and air—and this moisturizer is packaged in a jar, so that exposure is guaranteed to happen. For packaging alone, this moisturizer isn't your best bet, and it's not the oasis of hydration those with chronic dry skin have been seeking.

Claims

Rich, oil-free cream-gel instantly rehydrates. Skin stays comfortably plumped, even 24 hours after you put it on. Daily use helps fortify and repair skin's moisture barrier to keep moisture in, environmental irritants out. Better barrier, happier skin.

Ingredients

Water, Cyclopentasiloxane, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Dimethicone, Cetyl Ethylhexanoate, Squalane, Disteardimonium Hectorite, PEG/PPG-18/18 Dimethicone, Lauryl PEG-9 Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone, Triticum Vulgare (Wheat Bran) Extract, Ahnfeltia Concinna Extract, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Extract, Caffeine, Whey Protein\Lactis Protein, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Powder, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria), Cholesterol, Palmitoyl Oligopeptide, Sodium Hyaluronate, Petrolatum, PEG-150, Sucrose, Pyridoxine Dipalmitate, Linoleic Acid, Tocopheryl Acetate, Citric Acid, Polysilicone-11, Propylene Carbonate, Glyceryl Polymethacrylate, PEG-8, Pentaerythrityl Tetra-Di-T-Butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate, Sodium Citrate, Sodium Hexametaphosphate, Chlorphenesin, Phenoxyethanol

Brand Overview

Clinique At-A-Glance

Strengths: A few excellent moisturizers and serums; excellent sunscreens; very good cleansers and eye makeup removers; unique mattifying products; impressive selection of foundations, good concealers; some remarkable mascaras; much-improved eyeshadows, lip colors and blush formulas.

Weaknesses: Bar soaps (which can clog pores and dull skin); alcohol-based toners; unfortunate choice of jar packaging for antioxidant-loaded moisturizers.

Estee Lauder-owned Clinique launched the concept of cosmetics being "allergy-tested," "hypoallergenic," "100% fragrance-free," and "dermatologist tested." Of those marketing claims, the only one with significance is "100% fragrance-free," which, for the most part, Clinique maintains (although it does add some fragrant extracts to a few products). Unfortunately, terms like “hypoallergenic” and “dermatologist tested” aren’t regulated by the FDA and can mean anything—thus, you still need to rely on the ingredient list to tell you whether their product contains any ingredients with the potential to irritate skin.

That inconvenient fact aside, Clinique is leading the way with cutting-edge, state-of-the-art moisturizers and serums, plus some formidable makeup and more than a few excellent sunscreens. While Clinique has some products that we see as missteps for reasons discussed in their reviews, more than ever, what they offer is quite good (just have realistic expectations, as some of their claims go beyond what their products are capable of).

Turning to makeup, Clinique continues to offer a vast palette of colors and textures, especially with their enormous selection of foundations—many of which feature effective sunscreens. Without a doubt, the numerous formulas offer something for every skin type and almost every skin color—though the blushes, eye makeup and lip colors are frequently not pigmented enough for deeper skin tones.

The bottom line is that, despite a few shortcomings, Clinique is one of the most comprehensive (and comparably affordable) department-store makeup lines, and it is completely understandable why they enjoy such broad appeal.

Note: Clinique is categorized as one that tests on animals because their products are sold in China. Although Clinique does not conduct animal testing for their products sold elsewhere, the Chinese government requires imported cosmetics be tested on animals, so foreign companies retailing there must comply. This requirement is why some brand’s state that they don’t test on animals “unless required by law”. Animal rights organizations consider cosmetic companies retailed in China to be brands that test on animals, and so does the Beautypedia Team.

Junk

I wish I could give this zero stars. It's horrible. Sticky, does not moisturize at all. Such a waste of money.

It is a hydrator!

I love it! I am still young with combo skin but I started getting dehydration lines on my forehead, this cleared it up, it's so hydrating and luxurious to apply only thing though is the packaging it's a bit unhygienic

Allergic Nightmare

Don't buy this product! After using it just once, my face was hot to the touch. After applying product in am, my face started breaking out. Never have had a problem with any product like I have with this one. Can't seem to get my face cleared up. Trying to figure out what I am allergic to is impossible since it has a mile long ingredient list.

Perfect for dry combo skin

I have combination skin -- an oily t-zone that sometimes flakes, and dry cheeks that sometimes break out. I use this moisturizer only when my skin is especially dry, and it feels like it instantly soothes and repairs my skin. I can't use it year-round or all the time, or I'll break out from too much moisture. But any time I'm without it, I find myself buying it again because I haven't found anything else that is simultaneously so light but so moisturizing to get me through rough patches.

Not the stuff for me, which is too bad!

My skin was going through a period of extreme dryness. and this stuff helped, sure, but I had to use a lot of it to combat my skin's flakiness. On the other hand, a little bit goes a long ways with this product. You only need a tiny amount to cover your whole face since it spreads so well. Has a really lovely light feeling on the skin. This product also gave me little bumps all over my face after long-term use (months), and finally a rash. That's when I quit and bought something else.

STUNG

After having a slight reaction to a product, I walked up to the Clinique counter. Immediately when she applied the cream on my face, it stung like crazy. I'm now left with a raw sunburn looking face. Not happy at all.

Good night time moisturizer

This moisturizer feels wonderful on my skin. But does have a "sticky" feel to it. Therefore I have been using this as my night time moisturizer and waking up with hydrated skin. It also feels soothing after a winter day skiing or after a day on the beach with sun kissed cheeks!

Clinique Moisturizer

The product leaves a sticky residue on your skin that interfers with facial make-up. Have only used for 3 weeks and believe there is some benefit (previously I was using a pharmacy brand that did nothing for me) but the stickiness is a problem. The price of this was 60.00 for 50 ml. I am wiser now and would not pay this amount for any moisturizer and by the look of things there is no need to.
