Review Overview

This fragrance-free, eye-area primer contains several ingredients that show up in numerous other products claiming to lighten dark circles and reduce puffiness. Unfortunately, none of those ingredients have research proving they work (and given the number of products that contain those ingredients, you'd think no one would be concerned about dark circles or puffiness because they should all work, but alas, none do).

Beyond the dark circle and puffiness-reducing claims, this primer has a light, gel-cream texture that doesn't do much to "prime" skin around the eyes. It's not a special product to add to your routine, and doesn't contain anything that would help concealer or eye makeup last longer. What you're getting is a lightweight moisturizer for the eye area, one that contains enough film-forming agent to make skin look smoother. That's nice but you can get more benefits from countless serums or moisturizers suitable for use around the eyes (you don't need a special eye cream; see More Info for details). If you opt to try this anyway, it’s best for normal to slightly dry skin.

  • Fragrance-free with a lightweight, gel-cream texture.
  • Makes skin around the eyes or elsewhere look smoother.

  • Won’t do much, if anything, to reduce puffiness or lighten dark circles.
  • Doesn’t have a special ability to make concealer or eye makeup last longer.
  • Most of the intriguing ingredients are present in tiny amounts.

More Info:

We know it’s hard to believe, but the truth is you don’t need a special product for the eye area, whether labeled eye cream or something else. Although there is much you can do to improve the skin around your eyes, the ingredients capable of doing that don't need to come from, and often aren't even included in, an eye cream. For example, most eye creams (such as this one) don't contain sunscreen, and that is a serious problem because it leaves the skin around your eyes vulnerable to sun damage, which will make dark circles and wrinkling worse!

You can save money and take superior care of your eye area by using your face product, if it is well formulated and appropriate for the skin type around your eyes!

This smoothing, silicone-free primer immediately hydrates and reduces undereye puffiness. Formulated to strengthen the skin around the eye, this primer firms and rejuvenates while lightening dark undereye circles. It also doubles as a primer bonding to concealer and eyeshadow for even, color-true, long-lasting wear.

Cover FX At-A-Glance

Strengths: Broad range of foundation and concealer shades for those seeking moderate to full coverage; superior mineral powder foundation; good primer; most of the products are fragrance-free (but not all); very good brushes at an attractive price point.

Weaknesses: Lip balm/lipstick contains potential irritants; color range can be a little tricky for some of their products.

Co-founded by makeup artist Lee Graff and M.A.C. Cosmetic alumni’s, Cover FX is a Canadian company specializing in camouflage makeup, the area of concentration in which Graff has focused her career as a makeup artist. According to the company Web site, Graff’s dream “was to help men and women with skin conditions face the world with confidence by offering them makeup products with therapeutic benefits that would perfectly match their skin tone, be affordable, well tolerated by even the most sensitive skin, and achieve a perfectly natural, flawless effect.” Lofty goals, certainly! Cover FX manages to accomplish much of these with a line that has grown and been well curated over the years.

Many of the options within Cover FX offer medium to full coverage, but whenever serious camouflage is needed, there is a trade-off to accept that it won’t always look totally natural. To their credit, Cover FX's full coverage options look more natural on skin than many (and their expansive color options helps quite a bit).

If you don't need full coverage, there are several other products from Cover FX worth considering, from their Cream Concealer, Priming Serum to their Skin Tint, Custom Cover Drops and makeup brushes. This isn't a comprehensive makeup line (for example, you won't find eyeshadows, pencils, or mascara), but they are a cosmetics line that understands what it does best—and sticks with it.

Cover FX has an admirable goal in wanting to help people who have scars or discolorations face the world with their head held high. Without question, the right makeup can make a huge difference in such a person’s self-esteem, and as Cover FX has evolved over the years, they’ve launched impressive and unique formulas. There are a few that need work due to their use of potentially irritating ingredients—but fortunately, these are few and far between.

Should be POOR not average I think

This stuff is really expensive and is rubbish as an eye shadow primer. Honestly my bare skin holds makeup better than this. The product comes in a pump, which forces you to squirt out too much of it (probably to make you go through it faster). It burned/tingled my eyelids when I used it as well so it's of no use to me as an eye serum either.
