Review Overview

Advanced Radiance Age-Defying Liquid Makeup SPF 10 gets its sunscreen rating partially from titanium dioxide, so it’s sad that the SPF number is too low to rely on for daytime protection. Even more disturbing is Cover Girl’s “restores youthful appearance” claims, which would have resonated better with an SPF 15 sunscreen. There is no question you’ll be impressed with the airy-yet-creamy texture of this smooth-blending foundation. It blends on easily, providing sheer to light coverage and a radiant finish that enlivens the skin’s appearance. Despite the creamy feel, this isn’t the best formula for someone with dry skin because the base of silicone and glycerin combined with talc won’t be enough to make dryness look or feel better. However, this is an option if you pair it with a moisturizing sunscreen rated SPF 15 or higher. Cover Girl’s selection of 10 shades is mostly impressive and includes choices for fair to dark (but not very dark) skin tones.

The following shades are best avoided due to overtones of peach, pink, and red: Natural Ivory (which has enough pink to qualify as a blush), Classic Beige, Natural Beige, and Creamy Beige. This foundation does contain the Olay ingredients (remember, Cover Girl and Olay are owned by Procter & Gamble) niacinamide and palmitoyl pentapeptide-4, which is a nice touch, but what a shame the SPF rating falls short of the desired SPF 15.

Brand Overview

CoverGirl At-A-Glance

Strengths: Inexpensive and widely available; a hugely improved selection of foundations, several with reliable sunscreen; good concealers; enviable pressed powders; some fantastic Lash Blast mascaras; mostly great eyelining options; a vast selection of lip color options, from the long-wearing Outlast to sheer lip glosses to the wholly impressive Lip Perfection lipstick; several great options in the Queen Collection.

Weaknesses: The older foundations are seriously lacking; the newer Advanced Radiance foundation has great texture but disappointing SPF rating; powder blush and eyeshadows; terrible makeup brushes; all of the "Clean" products contain irritating ingredients.

Since 1961, CoverGirl has been slowly building a portfolio of cosmetics that today is about as all-encompassing as a makeup line can be. Originating from the same "medicated" ingredients found in Noxzema Skin Cream (which was never medicated in the least, but seriously irritating for skin), the debut products are still available, albeit with slight modifications. The good news is that for the past several years CoverGirl has consistently updated their line with some very impressive products, especially their foundations, concealers, and vastly improved pressed powders. They also offer some excellent eye and lip pencils, lipsticks and lip gloss, and one of the all-time best long-wearing lip paints, Outlast.

What's puzzling is that although many of CoverGirl's latest products are progressive, they tend to hang on to the lackluster-to-poor options, including abysmal powder blush and eyeshadows and their long-standing, very irritating Clean Makeup. These items may be part of CoverGirl's humble beginnings, but you certainly don't see parent company Proctor & Gamble adding eucalyptus oil and menthol to their Olay products or to products of any of the other cosmetics companies they own. If those ingredients were so important, why not use them everywhere? Needless to say, the great products outnumber the disappointments, and the prices make it easy for those on a budget to be beautiful and enjoy some state-of-the-art products, provided they shop wisely.

CoverGirl's Web site is extremely easy to navigate, and presents a wealth of product information, along with practical (if somewhat cutesy) tips and tricks for successful makeup application and for finding the shades that work best for you. CoverGirl's consumer relations department is consistently helpful if you have any questions or concerns. For example, if one of your favorite items was discontinued, you might want to know what replaced it, and they will let you know. Such service and customer concern is yet another powerful reason to believe CoverGirl really has its (class) act together.

Great foundation

Very happy with how great it makes my skin look. It goes on smoothly, it doesn't settle into lines, pores or wrinkles and gives my skin a beautiful radiant finish. I get no shiny t zone, it doesn't oxidize on me and lasts all day.

NEW PACKAGING:)

This is a very nice foundation and looks very natural while it covers beautifully. I have normal to dry skin and use this over an Olay Regenerist SPF cream. As long as you wear a good sunscreen under it you will be covered. This foundation has a slight fragrance to it but it doesn't bother my sensitive skin at all. I am glad they just changed the packaging and didn't discontinue this. It's been around for almost 10 years so that must tell you something!

Love this foundation

I switched to this foundation after years of wearing Avon. Unfortunately, Avon discontinued both of the foundations I was using, and replaced them with ones that are horribly dark orange. Anyhow, I tried Advanced Radiance and loved it. The shade is perfect for me (classic ivory) which is saying a lot because I have such a hard time finding a shade to suit my fair skin (I'm a redhead). The foundation has a creamy texture which is really easy to apply (I use my fingers), and I love the pump bottle. My old foundation came in one of those squeeze bottles, and when I couldn't squeeze any more out I'd get my husband to cut it open with scissors so I could get the other half out. I'll never buy foundation in a squeeze bottle again! The coverage is light to medium. I have a lot of red capillaries in my cheeks, so I need extra coverage just in those areas as this foundation doesn't quite have enough coverage for those. My skin is normal to dry and I'm nearly 40 so I have a fair bit of fine lines, but this foundation is great for not settling into the lines. I think the creamy texture helps in this regard. The finish is slightly dewy and looks great, even though my skin is slightly dry. Don't believe the review when it says this won't look good on dry skin. Even though the sunscreen is less than adequate (according to this website), I don't typically choose foundation based on how good the sunscreen is. With fair skin like mine, I wear a separate foundation for the sunny half of the year (I live in Canada - we don't see much sun over the winter). So don't let the low SPF figure discourage you from trying this foundation out. Lastly, I will say that this foundation has a noticeable fragrance. I have very sensitive skin and it has yet to bother me in any way, but some people may not like the fragrance.
