Despite containing a decent selection of ingredients to improve slightly dry skin, we cannot recommend this slightly creamy body lotion due to the amount of irritant eucalyptus extract it contains. Eucalyptus offers no benefits for skin but poses a risk of irritation that can make skin issues worse. Given the number of body lotions at the drugstore don't contain eucalyptus, why choose this one from Curel?

Even without the eucalyptus, the formula contains too little of anything truly innovative or exciting, and certainly nothing innovative to help rough, dry skin become much better. The shea butter is a nice addition, but the amount is likely too low to truly improve dryness. As for the honey, it's barely present, too; in fact, we suspect the reason Curel added caramel coloring is to reinforce the idea that honey is a larger part of the formula. Even if this were swimming in honey, body lotions from Olay, Cetaphil, CeraVe, Eucerin, and Dove offer more intriguing formulas.

  • Contains a decent mix of ingredients to improve dry (but not very dry) skin.
  • Inexpensive.
  • Amount of eucalyptus poses a risk of irritation you don't have to tolerate.
  • Lacks a sophisticated blend of repairing and antioxidant ingredients.
  • Shea butter is present in an amount that's likely too low to improve notably dry skin.

With shea butter, honey, and vanilla extracts, this specially formulated, non-greasy lotion intensely moisturizes and deeply conditions to smooth away dry, rough skin.

Water, Glycerin, Distearyldimonium Chloride, Petrolatum, Isopropyl Palmitate, Cetyl Alcohol, Cetyl-PG Hydroxyethyl Palmitamide, Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Extract, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Vanilla Planifolia Fruit Extract, Honey, Propylene Glycol, Butylene Glycol, Dipropylene Glycol, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Dimethicone, Fragrance, Sodium Chloride, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Ethoxydiglycol, Caramel.

Long a staple of the body-care aisle at drugstores around the world, Curel and its sister company Jergens (and Biore) are owned by the Japan-based Kao Corporation. Like Jergens, Curel offers an assortment of body lotions for dry, itchy skin. Whereas Jergens has expanded into an array of self-tanning products alongside their body lotions, Curel remains firmly based around body lotions for dry skin. Considering Curel’s specialty, it’s disappointing that so many of their body lotions disappoint, either due to average formulas or the inclusion of fragrant plant extracts (most often eucalyptus).

There’s truly nothing worth considering from Curel, and that’ sad. The price point is excellent, the sizes are generous, but none of this matters if what’s inside the bottles isn’t great for your skin. Don’t get us wrong; Curel’s body lotions contain some workhorse ingredients such as petrolatum and glycerin. Those can be great for dry skin, but they’re just the beginning—dry skin needs a range of ingredients, including repairing and cell-communicating substances plus antioxidants—and those are lacking in pretty much every product Curel offers. In essence, Curel isn’t the cure for dry skin.

If you’ve been intrigued by this line, your curiosity can stop here. Curel isn’t the answer for dry, itchy, or sensitive skin (indeed, several of its products are a problem for sensitive skin). Other drugstore body lotions offer more for your money, and without problematic ingredients like eucalyptus. Some of those may cost a bit more, but when you’re getting a truly superior formula, it’s money well spent!

I keep coming back to this lotion
    • I have been using this product on and off since I discovered it in high school. (I graduated college in 2009) just so you know how many years I have been using. I have tried other lotions and they just don't keep me moisturizer like Curel. The problem I have with every other lotion I have tried is that I am always dry and itchy after applying. I never have this problem with Curel. I just keep coming back to it like the prodigal son. The formula hasn't changed either. I love that.

    • The texture is nice, it doesn't feel greasy when I put it on, and it smells lightly of vanilla and honey. That said, it barely moisturized me at all. I finished off the bottle in record time simply because I had to keep reapplying -- even at this price (and it was on sale at Walmart, too!), I will not repurchase.
