This is a standard issue bar cleanser that contains elements of traditional soap with detergent cleansing agents. Despite some moisturizing ingredients, the overall effect on skin is drying and the soap leaves a residue that is difficult to rinse, so expect it to impede the performance of other, leave-on skin-care products.

Bar soaps are always a bad idea for skin because in addition to leaving residue behind, the ingredients that keep these types of soaps in bar form can clog pores and trigger irritation. You can find gentle, yet effective liquid cleanser recommendations on our Best Cleansers List.

Here's the whole story of beautiful skin in one word: moisture.

Now you know why Dove created its 1/4 moisturizing cream and put it into a beauty bar.

Brand Overview

Dove At-A-Glance

Strengths: Inexpensive; available in every major drugstore and mass-market store; some very good body washes.

Weaknesses: The Beauty Bars are not as bad as true soaps, but all bar cleansers present problems for skin.

From its beginnings in the 1940s with its still-available original Beauty Bar, Dove has expanded and the curiously curtailed its selection of skin-care products to the point where their facial care offerings are back to nothing more than bar cleansers.

Although their Beauty Bars have their share of problems (such as containing drying ingredients and not rinsing well), they're better than traditional bar soap. However, if you can get past your propensity for bar cleansers, neighboring lines at the drugstore offer better, gentler, water soluble cleansers (the kind Dove has offered in the past).

Where Dove holds sway at the drugstore is with its vast selection of body washes. Although the formulas often differ only by fragrance, for the most part they are excellent, affordable options, especially for normal to dry skin. The body washes in their men's line aren't quite as elegant as those in the main line, and guys should know their skin will do just fine with Dove's regular body washes.

Note: All Dove products contain fragrance unless otherwise noted.

Agree with Paula

Although less drying than other bar soaps, this product is still drying! Unfortunately, many people associate tightness with cleansing. My mom insists on using this, and I have used it on occasion, only to end up with tight, dry, itchy skin. There are so many other good cleansing products available that don't dry out the skin. I like Neutrogena Cleansing Oil, or even straight raw honey! Sounds weird, but honey is a natural humectant with antimicrobial properties, and also works great as a scrub!

Even cosmetic cop can make a mistaked

My husband had very dry skin, so dry, and sensitive. that his primary physician referred him to a dermatologist. The "derm" recommended fragrance-free Dove. It has worked wonderfully - no more dry skin, no flaking, no itchiness. I've tried it myself and find no hard-to-rinse residue. Maybe the fragranced versions of Dove are "poor" but non-fragrance Dove deserves a BEST rating. Highly recommended & good value when bought with coupons at stores having it on sale.

I totally disagree with Paula on this one. I use the sensitive Dove Cleansing Bar and it leaves my skin so soft and supple. I have very dry skin and I first remove my foundation and eye makeup with Organic COCONUT OIL. The Dove gets all the the rest off and does not dry my skin out. After that I use the Coconut Oil as my night time moisturizer. I used to spend a fortune on Clinique, etc. and now my skin looks better than ever at age 60. I use an SPF 30 during the day by Kiss My Face.
