Review Overview

A lot of cleansers on the market make all sorts of over-the-top claims when it comes to their performance, but this cleanser from Dove is a stripped-down basic formula that won't strip your skin.

The creamy formula features old-school emollients like petrolatum and mineral oil, which help soften skin and heal dryness. Also included are gentle cleansing agents and fatty acids that help remove dirt and makeup without being drying. There are no harsh detergents included in the formula - and it's fragrance-free, making this a great option for sensitive skin, too.

We should point out that because of the emollients, you'll probably need a washcloth for complete removal, and if you are prone to breakouts on your face, this is not the formula for you. However, if you have dry to very dry skin, this cleanser is a great option!

  • Includes emollients to soften skin and help relieve dryness.
  • Gentle cleansing agents and fatty acids remove dirt and makeup.
  • No harsh detergents.
  • Fragrance-free.
  • The emollient ingredients make this a less-than-ideal option for breakout-prone skin.
  • This cleanser is actually more like cold cream and must be wiped off skin, and repeated pulling at skin can cause sagging over time.

Restore natural moisture and beauty as this ultra-mild cleanser gently clears away dirt, oil and makeup while helping dry and delicate facial skin feel fresh and not tight. This extremely mild, non-foaming cleanser works best when used with other ultra gentle cleansers and intense repairing moisturizers from the Dove DermaSeries line.

Brand Overview

Dove At-A-Glance

Strengths: Inexpensive; available in every major drugstore and mass-market store; some very good body washes.

Weaknesses: The Beauty Bars are not as bad as true soaps, but all bar cleansers present problems for skin.

From its beginnings in the 1940s with its still-available original Beauty Bar, Dove has expanded and the curiously curtailed its selection of skin-care products to the point where their facial care offerings are back to nothing more than bar cleansers.

Although their Beauty Bars have their share of problems (such as containing drying ingredients and not rinsing well), they're better than traditional bar soap. However, if you can get past your propensity for bar cleansers, neighboring lines at the drugstore offer better, gentler, water soluble cleansers (the kind Dove has offered in the past).

Where Dove holds sway at the drugstore is with its vast selection of body washes. Although the formulas often differ only by fragrance, for the most part they are excellent, affordable options, especially for normal to dry skin. The body washes in their men's line aren't quite as elegant as those in the main line, and guys should know their skin will do just fine with Dove's regular body washes.

Note: All Dove products contain fragrance unless otherwise noted.

I love that this shows up as Best on Paula's list but I cannot buy anything that is tested on animals and I think that should be factored into the ratings. It could be great but I will never use it-tested on animals!
