Addressing the trickiness of precise shade-matching, e.l.f. developed this makeup with four chambers of loose powder foundation in different shades and undertones that can be mixed and blended to match your skin tone. While it does have a mineral-based sunscreen, the packaging and the product’s texture are problematic.

The sifter opening at the top of each chamber is too small to get product out easily. Add to that a slightly clumpy texture, and it’s even more challenging to get enough powder out or to blend it easily with another shade. It also takes effort to get the color blended the same way each time.

The clumping also makes even application difficult, but once blended (if you have the patience) the finish left behind is slightly luminous and feels somewhat creamy, while the coverage is light. The formula and finish works for all skin types.

Pros:
  • Soft, luminous finish.
  • Powder feels creamy, not overly dry.
  • Includes broad-spectrum mineral sunscreens.
Cons:
  • Very difficult to dispense from sifter opening.
  • Powder tends to clump together.
  • Doesn’t apply evenly.
  • Doesn’t blend well with the other shades in the component.
  • Difficult to get the same shade with each use.

As with any powder foundation with sunscreen, we do not recommend relying on it as your sole source of sun protection. It’s not that the sun protection isn’t helpful or effective; rather, it’s that most women will not apply enough of this to get the stated level of protection. For best anti-wrinkle results, a powder with sunscreen should be used in addition to a daytime moisturizer or foundation with sunscreen.
