Despite the name, this product isn’t a sunscreen lotion or cream; it’s a loose powder that provides a high level of sun protection from an unusually prodigious amount of the mineral sunscreen actives titanium dioxide and zinc oxide.

Although the mineral actives provide admirable broad-spectrum sun protection, they also lend this powder a heavy, chalky texture and dry finish that makes skin look dull rather than dimensional. The finish magnifies wrinkles (even so-called “fine lines) and any bit of dry skin you may have, even though it blends fairly well. Those with oily skin or oily areas will find this powder grabs and can be tricky to sheer out (even more so if you apply it with the enclosed puff rather than a powder brush).

Only one shade is available, and it’s a peachy-pink tint that helps offset the white cast the high amount of mineral actives have. Unfortunately, the tint isn’t a great compromise, as it looks obvious on fair to light skin and just plain odd on medium to tan skin tones. Note that the color e.l.f. displays on their Web site looks much more neutral than what you get.

The sun protection and price are great, but esthetically, this loose powder is impossible to recommend.
