Other than the addition of a few plant extracts and fragrance in the form of methyl dihydrojasmonate, Estee Lauder's Advanced Night Micro Cleansing Balm is nearly identical to sister company Clinique's Take the Day Off Cleansing Balm. Clinique's versions costs much less, comes in a larger size, and omits the fragrance, making it an overall better option for your skin and beauty budget!

Lauder's contribution deserves its rating because it works so well to remove all types of makeup without making skin feel dry or tight (or greasy); however, it doesn't contain anything special or "micro" (whatever that means in the context of this cleanser) to make it the preferred choice.

Like Clinique's version, Lauder's Advanced Night Micro Cleansing Balm is best for dry to very dry skin not prone to breakouts. The fragrance additives make this a no-go for those with sensitive, redness-prone skin.

Pros:
  • Wonderfully rich texture leaves skin feeling comforted and soft.
  • Easily removes all types of makeup.
  • Doesn't leave a greasy, film-y residue.
  • Contains soothing plant extracts.
  • The ease of a balm with the cleansing ability of an oil.
Cons:
  • Lavender extract and fragrance ingredients pose a slight risk of irritation.

Brand Overview

Estee Lauder At-A-Glance

The history of Estee Lauder goes back to 1946, when the woman who created the brand (and for whom it is named) began selling creams and lotions made by her chemist uncle. From its humble beginnings, Estee Lauder has grown to become a multibillion-dollar company whose products are sold all over the world and advertised in just about every fashion and women's lifestyle magazine available.

The biggest compliment we can pay to the venerable Estee Lauder line is that their moisturizers and serums can largely be described as state-of-the-art. Though fragrance is often intrusive, but when it comes to formulary excellence culminating in products that give skin what it needs to function optimally, they are tough to beat.

When it comes to makeup, by and large the brand also exceeds expectations. Though there are some under-performing products (you can read more about them in our individual reviews), Lauder has a number of excellent options, most notably its lip colors.
