Estee Lauder's New Dimension Expert Liquid Tape is a product that claims to be the skincare equivalent to an old cosmetic technique: Taping parts of the face to make them appear smoother and less wrinkled. In some ways it works, but that isn't this product's strong point. The positive news it that this does have some strong points, which is why it earns a good rating.

New Dimension Expert Liquid Tape starts things off right with its packaging. It comes in an opaque tube with a needle-nose dispenser, which protects its beneficial (yet delicate) ingredients from light and air exposure. The product itself is a fragrance-free, somewhat viscous, lightweight fluid that absorbs quickly into skin.

Here's where the "liquid tape" aspect kicks in: Estee Lauder recommends this as the first step in your daytime or nighttime skincare routine after cleansing. You're directed to apply this fluid to areas of the face that you want to appear smoother, then let it dry for two minutes, which creates a seal over skin that pulls your skin taunt. After that, you're supposed to pat or dab on the rest of your skincare products, taking care not to break the seal.

To be clear, while you will definitely feel a tightening of your skin (which will feel too tight on very dry skin), that's a cosmetic effect resulting from the film-forming agents included in the formula, not a long-term solution for wrinkles. It also makes the rest of your skincare routine somewhat cumbersome, as most toners, serums, and definitely moisturizers with SPF need to be carefully rubbed in or smoothed across skin to go on evenly and absorb fully. There are absolutely products that can be dabbed or patted onto skin out there, but those generally come last in a skincare routine instead of comprising the entire routine itself!

When New Dimension Expert Liquid Tape completely dries, there's also the chance of some pilling and balling up that results from the seal it creates breaking up and rolling off skin—much like all-purpose glue can roll up and pill when it's dried. (Seeing this carefully constructed look peeling off reminding us a bit of Meryl Streep's character from Death Becomes Her.)

The good news about New Dimension Expert Liquid Tape is that you don't just have to use it as Lauder indicates; if you apply your other skincare products immediately after putting it on, instead of letting it dry, it doesn't have the tightening sensation or pilling effect. This is great because gimmicky premise aside, there are a lot of things to love about the formula!

New Dimension Expert Liquid Tape is packed with beneficial ingredients. They include a number of antioxidants for a free-radical fighting boost, as well as some skin-identical ingredients, anti-irritants, and even a couple of peptides. Though this is definitely not moisturizing enough to use as a moisturizer, it would serve well as a serum, which is how we recommend using it to get its maximum benefit.

Even though the main selling point of this product doesn't make "every angle your best angle", Estee Lauder's New Dimension Expert Liquid Tape has enough good things going for it that it gets our recommendation!

Pros:
  • Packaged in a container that will keep its beneficial ingredients stable.
  • Fragrance-free.
  • Contains a number of antioxidants plus some repairing and cell-communicating ingredients.
Cons:
  • "Liquid tape" aspect is gimmicky and cumbersome to most skincare routines.

Brand Overview

Estee Lauder At-A-Glance

The history of Estee Lauder goes back to 1946, when the woman who created the brand (and for whom it is named) began selling creams and lotions made by her chemist uncle. From its humble beginnings, Estee Lauder has grown to become a multibillion-dollar company whose products are sold all over the world and advertised in just about every fashion and women's lifestyle magazine available.

The biggest compliment we can pay to the venerable Estee Lauder line is that their moisturizers and serums can largely be described as state-of-the-art. Though fragrance is often intrusive, but when it comes to formulary excellence culminating in products that give skin what it needs to function optimally, they are tough to beat.

When it comes to makeup, by and large the brand also exceeds expectations. Though there are some under-performing products (you can read more about them in our individual reviews), Lauder has a number of excellent options, most notably its lip colors.
