Estee Lauder's New Dimension Shape + Fill Expert Serum has brought "contouring to skincare…", or say they say. With claims like, "you'll see more defined looking facial contours," and, "cheeks and jawline are visibly more lifted," it's easy to see why people would be intrigued by this product. The problem? Those claims just don't match up with what the science demonstrates is possible from skincare—or with the physiology of skin. Marketing spin aside, this product still has some merit as a serum packed with an array of beneficial ingredients.

The premise of New Dimension Shape + Fill Expert Serum is that it's supposed to improve skin's dimension, density and definition. As they put it, "Your profile appears beautifully perfected from every angle." It's evident that Lauder is trying to appeal to a younger, selfie-taking generation by playing up the "contouring" angle instead of anti-aging here.

Regardless, the formula is packed with skin-identical ingredients, antioxidants, peptides and beneficial fatty acids… all of which can help improve skin and help to repair the signs of aging in one way or another. But that's really what you should take this product for: An anti-aging serum, nothing more, nothing less.

Implying that it can alter your face structure and lift skin—that just isn't possible within the realm of skincare. More to the point, if this product could really add "definition" then why do they recommend applying it all over your face rather than spot treating the areas you want to "define"? You see where we're going here? Simply put, there aren't any ingredients in this serum that can do that. Can this serum's blend of ingredients help strengthen skin's barrier? Yes, and that's great, but it's not going to change your face shape, shore up sagging skin, or act like a filler would to change the structure of your face.

Another point of contention with this product is the wafting fragrance upon initial application. It eventually becomes less potent, and going by the ingredient list, the concentration of fragrance appears to be low, so the need for concern over its potential to irritate skin is debatable, but we feel some concern is warranted. Of course, we wish they would have just left out the fragrance altogether, especially for those with sensitive skin. (See More Info if you're curious to learn why fragrance can be problem for any skin type.)

We're also a little "wishy-washy" on this serum's consistency—the fluid, silky, thin lotion-like texture is lightweight enough to work for a variety of skin types, but we also noticed it pilled when applied in anything more than a very thin layer. (This issue was most evident when applying another product, like foundation, over it.)

What we can say with true enthusiasm is that we adore the opaque, pump-style packaging that keeps the delicate beneficial ingredients stable (and it's pretty to look at, too!).

New Dimension Shape + Fill Expert Serum ends up being a tricky product to rate. It contains a good mix of anti-aging ingredients to improve skin—but that's coupled with an amount of fragrance that remains a concern for potential risk of irritation, not to mention lifting and contouring claims that cannot come true. In the end, its juxtaposition of good and not-so-good qualities result in a middle of the road rating... and for this much money, you really should expect better.

Pros:
  • Contains anti-aging skin-identical ingredients, antioxidants, and peptides.
  • Opaque, pump-style packaging helps keep the beneficial ingredients stable.
Cons:
  • Wafting amount of fragrance has the potential to irritate skin.
  • Cannot live up to the claims to redefine your face shape.
  • May pill, particularly when applying makeup over it.
More Info:

Daily use of products that contain a high amount of fragrance, whether the fragrant ingredients are synthetic or natural, causes chronic irritation that can damage healthy collagen production, lead to or worsen dryness, and impair your skin's ability to heal. Fragrance-free is the best way for all skin types to go for all skin types (Food and Chemical Toxicology, 2008 & American Journal of Clinical Dermatology, 2003).

The sneaky part about irritation is that research has demonstrated that you don't always need to see it or feel it for your skin to suffer damage, and that damage may remain hidden for a long time (Skin Pharmacology and Physiology, 2008).

In fact, the effect of inflammation in the skin is cumulative, and repeated exposure to irritants contributes to a weakened skin barrier, slower healing (including of red marks from breakouts), and a dull, uneven complexion (Aging, 2012 & Chemical Immunology and Allergy, 2012).

Brand Overview

Estee Lauder At-A-Glance

The history of Estee Lauder goes back to 1946, when the woman who created the brand (and for whom it is named) began selling creams and lotions made by her chemist uncle. From its humble beginnings, Estee Lauder has grown to become a multibillion-dollar company whose products are sold all over the world and advertised in just about every fashion and women's lifestyle magazine available.

The biggest compliment we can pay to the venerable Estee Lauder line is that their moisturizers and serums can largely be described as state-of-the-art. Though fragrance is often intrusive, but when it comes to formulary excellence culminating in products that give skin what it needs to function optimally, they are tough to beat.

When it comes to makeup, by and large the brand also exceeds expectations. Though there are some under-performing products (you can read more about them in our individual reviews), Lauder has a number of excellent options, most notably its lip colors.
