Nutritious Rosy Prism Radiant Gel Emulsion follows the impressive and disappointing pattern of many other Lauder moisturizers: A great formula whose numerous light- and air-sensitive ingredients will suffer from the first use due to jar packaging. See More Info to learn why this type of packaging is the wrong choice when shopping for state of the art moisturizers.

As for what's inside the jar, it's a water-based gel whose lightweight texture hydrates without heaviness, so it's suitable for combination to oily and breakout-prone skin. It contains an impressive roster of antioxidants which fight multiple signs of aging, yet these are the very ingredients that shouldn't be housed in a jar! How maddening!

Also maddening is Lauder's claim that this Rosy Prism product is exclusively for Asian skin. The thinking is that because many Asian women are bothered by their yellow skin tone they'll flock to a product like this, whose pale pink tinge helps reduce (to a subtle degree) a yellow cast. But the ingredients in here that can improve an uneven skin tone (regardless of your race) aren't going be of much help because of the packaging.

The "exclusively for Asian skin" claim is meaningless because there are no special ingredients or formulary considerations Asian skin needs compared with other ethnicities. It's not as though Asians can only eat Asian food to be healthy, or if they have a cold or flu they're treated with different medicines than other ethnicities! Can you imagine?

What this moisturizer can do (though again, the packaging gets in the way of earing a solid recommendation) is plump and smooth skin, keeping it hydrated for hours without feeling slick or greasy. Just to be clear, though, this doesn't leave a matte or absorbent finish; you will see a sheen.

One more comment: This moisturizer's fragrance can pose a risk of irritation to those with sensitive skin.

Pros:

  • Silky gel texture hydrates and plumps skin for hours.
  • Contains an impressive mix of antioxidants.

Cons:

  • Jar packaging will hinder the effectiveness of key ingredients.
  • Expensive for what you get and the disappointing (yet pretty) packaging.
  • The claims of exclusivity for Asian skin tones are marketing, not fact.

More Info:

Jar Packaging: The fact that it’s packaged in a jar means the beneficial ingredients won't remain stable once it is opened. All plant extracts, almost all vitamins, antioxidants, and other state-of-the-art ingredients break down in the presence of air. Therefore, once a jar is opened and lets the air in, these important ingredients begin to deteriorate. Jars also are unsanitary because you’re dipping your fingers into them with each use, adding bacteria that further deteriorate the beneficial ingredients.

The vast majority of ingredients that are most beneficial for your skin are not stable in the presence of light and air, which is exactly what happens when you take the lid off a jar (Pharmacology Review, 2013 & Journal of Biophotonics, 2010).

One of the critical factors in any anti-aging or skin-healing formula is the amount and variety of antioxidants, cell-communicating ingredients, and skin-repairing ingredients, and the more the better. These function in a variety of ways to reduce the effects of the constant environmental stresses your skin experiences (Dermatology Research and Practice, 2012 & The Journal of Pathology, 2007).

Antioxidants, cell-communicating ingredients, and skin-repairing ingredients not only can help prevent free-radical damage, but also, to a fairly impressive extent, help repair that damage. Surprisingly, almost all of these ingredients are just as vulnerable to sun exposure, pollution, and cigarette smoke as your skin (Pharmacognosy Review, 2013 & Journal of Biophotonics, 2010).

Once you open that jar you bought, you immediately compromise the stability of the anti-aging superstars it contains. (You can visualize their benefits disappearing like puffs of air each time you open up that lid!)

Brand Overview

Estee Lauder At-A-Glance

The history of Estee Lauder goes back to 1946, when the woman who created the brand (and for whom it is named) began selling creams and lotions made by her chemist uncle. From its humble beginnings, Estee Lauder has grown to become a multibillion-dollar company whose products are sold all over the world and advertised in just about every fashion and women's lifestyle magazine available.

The biggest compliment we can pay to the venerable Estee Lauder line is that their moisturizers and serums can largely be described as state-of-the-art. Though fragrance is often intrusive, but when it comes to formulary excellence culminating in products that give skin what it needs to function optimally, they are tough to beat.

When it comes to makeup, by and large the brand also exceeds expectations. Though there are some under-performing products (you can read more about them in our individual reviews), Lauder has a number of excellent options, most notably its lip colors.
