This cleanser/scrub hybrid is a good option for oily or combination skin, though its scrub component isn't ideal for use when removing makeup. As a daytime cleanser on makeup-free skin, this removes excess oil and polishes skin so it's smooth, but you can get the same benefit using a less expensive gel cleanser and a cotton washcloth.

Even better for exfoliation, particularly if you have clogged pores: Use a regular cleanser and follow with a BHA (beta hydroxy acid) exfoliant that contains salicylic acid. Unlike scrubs, BHA can truly unclog pores and help control excess oil by exfoliating inside the pore lining where oil blockages and breakouts occur.

We're recommending this as a good water-soluble gel cleanser that also works as a scrub, but don't buy this hoping it will unclog pores or significantly improve oily skin. Despite claims to the contrary, a product like this has limitations.

Pros:
  • Cleanses and smoothes skin.
  • Rinses easily.
Cons:
  • The scrub component isn't ideal for removing makeup (especially eye makeup), which means this product is best used on makeup-free skin in the morning.
  • Cannot unclog pores as claimed.

Brand Overview

Estee Lauder At-A-Glance

The history of Estee Lauder goes back to 1946, when the woman who created the brand (and for whom it is named) began selling creams and lotions made by her chemist uncle. From its humble beginnings, Estee Lauder has grown to become a multibillion-dollar company whose products are sold all over the world and advertised in just about every fashion and women's lifestyle magazine available.

The biggest compliment we can pay to the venerable Estee Lauder line is that their moisturizers and serums can largely be described as state-of-the-art. Though fragrance is often intrusive, but when it comes to formulary excellence culminating in products that give skin what it needs to function optimally, they are tough to beat.

When it comes to makeup, by and large the brand also exceeds expectations. Though there are some under-performing products (you can read more about them in our individual reviews), Lauder has a number of excellent options, most notably its lip colors.
