We suppose the curiosity about the Advanced Time Zone products comes from the attention-getting claim that you’ll look younger in 5 days. That would certainly grab our attention, but if you stop and think, it really isn’t a claim we haven’t heard before, from Lauder and numerous other lines. If skin is rough and dry and you put a moisturizer on you’re going to look younger (maybe years younger), but you don’t need this product to achieve that.

Examining the ingredient list for this so-called “advanced” Time Zone product reveals that it truly isn’t different from most other daytime moisturizers with sunscreen, sold by Lauder and other companies. In fact, this differs little from the previous Time Zone daytime moisturizer with sunscreen, which Lauder heralded as the be-all, end-all not too long ago! The main difference between Advanced Time Zone and its former incarnation is that the latest version offers more robust sun protection that includes octocrylene to stabilize the UVA-screening active ingredient avobenzone.

This daytime moisturizer with sunscreen provides sufficient broad-spectrum sun protection and it has a creamy texture suitable for normal to dry skin. However, and this is the key reason why you shouldn’t spend money on this product, the jar packaging undermines the effectiveness of the numerous antioxidants (mostly plant extracts) Lauder included. Just like many of their moisturizers, the overall formula is incredibly sophisticated and chockfull of potentially beneficial ingredients—if only they were packaged so those ingredients would retain their potency once it was opened and you started using it! Of course, given this product’s price you also have to ask yourself how likely you’ll be to apply it liberally. Liberal application is essential to get the amount of sun protection touted on the label.

Note: The mica this contains leaves a soft shine on skin. That can be attractive, but it’s a cosmetic effect, not a special attribute of this product.

Brand Overview

Estee Lauder At-A-Glance

The history of Estee Lauder goes back to 1946, when the woman who created the brand (and for whom it is named) began selling creams and lotions made by her chemist uncle. From its humble beginnings, Estee Lauder has grown to become a multibillion-dollar company whose products are sold all over the world and advertised in just about every fashion and women's lifestyle magazine available.

The biggest compliment we can pay to the venerable Estee Lauder line is that their moisturizers and serums can largely be described as state-of-the-art. Though fragrance is often intrusive, but when it comes to formulary excellence culminating in products that give skin what it needs to function optimally, they are tough to beat.

When it comes to makeup, by and large the brand also exceeds expectations. Though there are some under-performing products (you can read more about them in our individual reviews), Lauder has a number of excellent options, most notably its lip colors.
