This concentrated body balm is an oatmeal-based formula that contains a high amount of plant oils and wax to protect, repair and rebuild dry to very dry skin anywhere on the body. First Aid Beauty mentions this can help patches of eczema, and it can, though the jar packaging (which, truth be told, is necessary for a product this thick) will deplete some of the effectiveness of the plant oils and extracts this contains.

Although there¹s a lot to like about this formula, we¹re disappointed that it also contains proven skin irritant eucalyptus oil. That¹s not an ingredient dry, compromised skin needs! Although eucalyptus oil has antimicrobial and antifungal activity, it contains chemical components that can be irritating and some of them are toxic and can be fatal when ingested. Truly a mixed bag, because this oil, like rosemary oil, is one that has benefits and risks. Because the risks are primarily with topical application to skin, eucalyptus oil is an ingredient to avoid (Sources: www.naturaldatabase.com; Basic Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology, June 2006, pages 575-581).

Pros:
  • Ultra-rich formula contains ingredients that can improve dry skin, including patches of eczema.
  • Concentrated formula so the price isn¹t too out of line.
Cons:
  • Everything good about this product is less enticing because it contains irritant eucalyptus oil.

This product delivers the healing power of FAB Ultra Repair Cream in a concentrated, luxurious balm to instantly repair even the most stubborn patches of dry skin, even eczema. The ultimate skin elixir, it soothes, hydrates, and conditions heels, elbows, cuticles, or dry patches anywhere on the face or body.

Colloidal Oatmeal, Water, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, Beeswax (Cera Alba), Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter, Glycerin, Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Germ Oil, Urea, Dimethicone, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Allantoin, Chrysanthemum Parthenium (Feverfew) Extract, Camellia Sinensis (White Tea) Leaf Extract, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract, Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Oil, Ceramide 3.

With a name like First Aid Beauty (FAB for short), it's obvious this line is meant to rescue your skin from distress, and, indeed, these products are targeted toward those who have sensitive, easily irritated skin, but who still want an elegant, department-store flair. Ironically, FAB falls short on both ends of the spectrum.

Despite the company's claims of providing "therapeutic action" for "tough skin conditions," some of the products contain irritating ingredients that are extremely problematic for any skin type, especially for those with sensitive or compromised skin. It was disappointing to see known irritants like sulfur, balsam resin, and witch hazel in products claiming to calm your skin and reduce redness. "What were they thinking?" was a question that came up more than once while reviewing this line!

On the bright side, First Aid Beauty does have a very good fragrance-free body wash. There are also a few products that omit the fragrance, which is a definite must for sensitive skin, although, in fact, all skin types do best with fragrance-free products. Unfortunately, the fragrance-free formulas in this line come up short on important ingredients, like antioxidants and skin-repairing ingredients.

It is best to avoid their Ultra Repair Cream, the SPF 30 sunscreen, Detox Eye Roller, Blemish Eraser, and the Anti-Redness Serum because they all contain enough irritating ingredients to make conditions like acne, redness, and sensitivity worse.
