The premise behind Gold Bond's Dark Spot Minimizing Body Cream is a "multi-action formula" that moisturizes, exfoliates, and delivers "tone-evening ingredients" to help minimize the appearance of dark spots. The formula shows potential, though we're not completely sold…

Let's start by addressing the moisturizing claim first. Dark Spot Minimizing Body Cream does indeed provide intense hydration via its emollient cream texture. It's thick enough to stay put where you want it to, making this an ideal option for targeting dark spots anywhere on the body as claimed.

As for the "gentle exfoliation" claims, the high amount of hydroxyethyl urea and gluconolactone (also known as polyhydroxy acid, PHA for short) show promise, but the formula's pH is a bit beyond the ideal range needed for effective exfoliation. If we're being generous, we can surmise that you're at least getting a little benefit for speeding up cell turnover (which in turn can help with hyperpigmentation)—just not as much as one would hope.

As for the "Sea Daffodil" (Pancratium maritimum extract) that Gold Bond claims helps reduce dark spots, we couldn't find peer-reviewed, published research to back that up, so we're not too excited in that regard, but there are other "tone-evening ingredients" of interest. Chief among them is the vitamin C that Dark Spot Minimizing Body Cream contains. It's a beneficial ingredient for helping lighten discolorations and it's nice to see in combination with other potent antioxidants such as ubiquinone and vitamin E. More to love, Dark Spot Minimizing Body Cream is housed in an opaque squeeze tube to help keep the formula potent and stable.

The bottom line: Gold Bond's Dark Spot Minimizing Body Cream shows promise for helping fade dark spots, though we wouldn't bill it a powerhouse formula, nor we would rank it up there with the Best Skin-Lightening Products.

Pros:
  • Vitamin C shows promise for helping lighten discolorations.
  • Additional antioxidants help repair signs of sun damage.
  • Potentially some exfoliation benefit.
Cons:
  • No reliable research to back up Sea Daffodil's ability to reduce dark spots.
  • There are more effective skin-lighteners to consider.

Brand Overview

Gold Bond At-A-Glance

Gold Bond is a staple at drugstores due to their small selection of body lotions, anti-itch products, and various foot-care products. Though there are a number of Gold Bond products containing the potent irritant menthol (particularly its foot care and "medicated" products), in recent years Gold Bond has taken great strides and now offers some impressive moisturizers that are fairly priced, too.
