Before we get down to specifics about this CC cream, we need to explain the differences between CC creams and BB creams: It's marketing, nothing more. Generally, BB creams from U.S. cosmetics brands are similar to a tinted moisturizer, whereas BB creams from Asia are generally thicker and have a high SPF rating. CC creams are more like liquid foundations, but not always. BB and CC creams typically provide sun protection and may or may not include beneficial ingredients like antioxidants or skin-lightening agents. Neither BB nor CC creams are as revolutionary as they are made out to be, and there is certainly no consistency among products from different brands. We know, it's completely confusing, but there you have it. Whew!

Every CC cream has an angle, and this Hydroxatone CC cream is all about acne. Although it does contain some good anti-inflammatory ingredients that work for all skin types, the only real anti-acne ingredient in it is salicylic acid. Unfortunately, the tiny amount of salicylic acid and this product's too-high pH level don't make this an effective choice when battling breakouts.

This has a creamy texture that blends well and is hydrating, but dries quickly so you don't have much time to blend. It sets to a natural satin finish, but the sheen won't make someone with oily, acne-prone skin happy. In fact, it really is too creamy for most with blemish-prone skin.

Turning to the shades: This CC cream has a translucent option as well as four pigmented shades that are suitable for light to medium dark skin tones.

Sadly, the formula contains a potentially irritating amount of orange oil and fragrance, which are problems for all skin types, whether acne is a concern or not. No matter what skin type you have, it's important to choose effective, non-irritating products. Irritation can cause skin to produce excess oil, which is not a risk that anyone with oily, acne-prone skin needs!

Pros:
  • Good mix of antioxidants and other anti-aging ingredients.
  • Attractive shades plus a colorless option.
  • Blends well.
  • Natural satin finish.
Cons:
  • Too creamy for blemish-prone skin.
  • Doesn't contain sunscreen as many CC creams do.
  • The too-high pH and the small amount of salicylic acid makes this unlikely to improve breakouts.
  • Includes irritating orange oil and fragrance.

Hydroxatone is a mail-order company that sells various anti-wrinkle and anti-aging products, all at fairly high prices. You need to know that these products are absolutely not worth your attention, let alone your beauty dollars. It's not that they don't contain some great ingredients, but almost every formula has its share of problems that make investing in this line the wrong way to go (especially if your concern is wrinkles or discolorations).

The key ingredients Hydroxatone touts are peptides and hyaluronic acid. These ingredients are used industry-wide, so you're not getting anything special or unique with Hydroxatone. What's particularly frustrating is that the company makes a much bigger deal about their "special" ingredients then is deserved. For example, the peptides don't work like Botox, the hyaluronic acid won't replace the need for dermal fillers, and their claim that these products contain the most effective anti-wrinkle ingredients isn't supported by published research. Even the "clinical studies" Hydroxatone mentions are meaningless, especially since they weren't done double-blind and the results were not compared with other products (that, in most cases, would likely work even better).
